Construction Worker

Prepares site for daily work, performs all housekeeping and duties necessary for daily activities. Responsibilities include operating jackhammers and drills to break up concrete or pavement, positioning, joining, aligning, and sealing structural components, such as concrete wall sections and pipes, shoveling cement and other materials into portable cement mixers, mixing, pouring, and spreading concrete, signaling equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials, smoothing and finishing freshly poured cement or concrete, tending to machines that pump concrete, grout, and sand, tending to pumps, compressors, and generators to provide power for tools, machinery, and equipment, lubricating, cleaning, and repairing machinery, equipment, and tools, operating, reading, and maintaining air monitoring and other sampling devices in confined and/or hazardous environments, assisting in building and positioning forms for pouring concrete, dismantling forms after use, cleaning and preparing construction sites to eliminate possible hazards, controlling traffic passing near, in, and around work zones, digging ditches or trenches, backfilling excavations, and compacting and leveling earth to grade specifications, erecting and disassembling scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, and other temporary structures, loading, unloading, and identifying building materials, machinery, and tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans and specifications, acting as a watch when welding or metal cutting is performed by craft workers, reading and interpreting plans, instructions, and specifications to determine work activities, expediting materials and equipment to work locations and setting up work sites, completing records, maintaining tools and equipment, and performing various janitorial activities, observing and complying with all safety and project rules, including wearing required personal safety equipment, and performing other duties as required.

Job requirements include planning work and selecting proper tools, comparing and seeing differences in the size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects, visualizing objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings, making decisions based on measurable criteria, and working at heights without fear.

Qualifications may require a high school diploma or its equivalent with previous years of experience in the field or in a related area. Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field is required. Instructions and pre-established guidelines are relied upon to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

Physical requirements include standing 70% of the time, walking 20% of the time, sitting 10% of the time, lifting 50 lb, carrying 50 lb, pushing 70 ft-lb, pulling 70 ft-lb, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, fingering.
