Description: The Pre-Admission Services Registered Nurse specializes in comprehensive pre-operative patient assessment and risk evaluation to ensure optimal surgical outcomes and patient safety. This role focuses primarily on the pre-operative phase of the patient's surgical experience. The RN conducts thorough screenings to identify potential anesthesia and surgical risks through telephone consultations and in-person visits. The RN works collaboratively with advanced practice providers, anesthesia teams, surgeons, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to optimize patient preparation and ensure appropriate medical clearance prior to procedures. He/she ensures the provision of quality, evidence-based care through the utilization of the nursing process, established clinical protocols, and evidence-based risk assessment tools. The Pre-Admission Services RN acts as a patient advocate, ensuring surgical patients are appropriately evaluated and medically optimized when indicated. He/she thoroughly educates patients about pre-operative preparation and expectations for their surgical experience. This position requires advanced clinical judgment and excellent communication skills. The ability to work independently while maintaining close collaboration with the perioperative care team is essential. The RN conducts comprehensive pre-operative assessments via telephone and in-person consultations to evaluate patient readiness for surgery and anesthesia. He/she performs systematic reviews of patient medical history, current medications, allergies, and previous surgical/anesthetic experiences. The RN assesses and identifies potential anesthesia and surgical risks using evidence-based screening tools and established clinical protocols. He/she evaluates the patient's physical, psychological, and social readiness for planned procedures. The RN monitors vital signs and performs focused physical assessments as indicated during in-person pre-admission visits. He/she recognizes high-risk patients requiring additional medical clearance, optimization, or specialty consultation. The RN coordinates pre-operative testing, consultations, and medical clearances based on patient risk factors and procedure requirements. He/she makes independent clinical judgments regarding patient readiness for surgery based on established protocols. The RN documents comprehensive pre-operative assessments and risk evaluations accurately and completely. He/she monitors and triages messages related to pre-admission services in accordance with clinic protocols. The RN provides telephone triage for pre-operative patient calls regarding clinical questions and procedure preparation. He/she manages referrals and coordinates pre-operative consultations between specialties and primary care providers. The RN communicates assessment findings and recommendations clearly to anesthesia providers and healthcare team members. He/she processes and coordinates pre-operative orders, laboratory results, and diagnostic testing. The RN provides comprehensive pre-operative education tailored to individual patient needs, literacy levels, and cultural backgrounds. He/she explains surgical procedures, anesthesia options, and post-operative expectations in terms patients can understand. The RN delivers written and verbal instructions for pre-operative preparation including dietary restrictions, medication management, and arrival procedures. He/she addresses patient and family concerns, questions, and anxieties regarding upcoming procedures. The RN counsels patients on pre-operative medication adjustments and preparation requirements specific to their procedure. He/she supports patients in understanding informed consent processes and documentation requirements. The RN facilitates patient understanding of post-operative care expectations and discharge planning. The employee supports the organization's mission, vision, and values. The RN works closely with certified registered nurse anesthetists, anesthesiologists, surgeons, nurse practitioners, and other team members to ensure coordinated perioperative care. The RN communicates effectively with staff, scheduling departments, and other healthcare providers to ensure seamless care coordination. He/she maintains effective working relationships across multiple departments and service lines. Agency nurses will be floated to other departments where they are qualified to perform patient care before core staff is floated. The RN adheres to all clinic policies, procedures, and safety protocols specific to pre-admission services. He/she maintains compliance with regulatory requirements and applies evidence-based practice guidelines to ensure consistent, high-quality care. The RN participates in quality improvement initiatives related to patient outcomes. He/she identifies opportunities for process improvement in workflows and patient care delivery. The RN monitors and evaluates patient satisfaction and outcomes related to pre-admission services. He/she recognizes and reports potential safety concerns and participates in required education related to the position.
