Accounting Manager

Job Summary The Accounting Manager role at Bellwether is a hands‑on, detail‑oriented position responsible for managing the financial operations of Canadian and U.S. entities. Reporting to the CFO, the manager will handle day‑to‑day accounting, month‑end closing, financial reporting, and audit support while leveraging accounting systems. The role involves consolidating financial information, supporting IFRS reporting, and coordinating internal and outsourced accounting resources to build a centralized North American accounting function. Key Responsibilities Accounting and Financial Reporting Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for Canadian and U.S. entities. Support the preparation of consolidated financial information and related supporting schedules. Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, prepaids, reconciliations, intercompany entries, and other month‑end close items. Review accounting records to ensure accuracy, completeness, and appropriate classification of transactions. Work directly in QuickBooks Online and other accounting systems used by the group to process, review, reconcile, and analyze accounting information. Enter invoices, create and maintain vendor records, review supporting documentation, and ensure expenses are coded to the appropriate entity, account, tax treatment, and reporting period. Prepare payment batches and enter payments into banking platforms or other payment systems, subject to established review and approval controls. Support the implementation and maintenance of consistent accounting processes across Canadian and U.S. entities. Assist in the preparation of internal financial reporting packages for management, the leadership team, and the Board. Ensure accounting records and financial statements are prepared in accordance with applicable accounting policies, including International Financial Reporting Standards. Month End Close and Controls Lead the month‑end close process for assigned entities and ensure reporting deadlines are met. Coordinate month‑end close activities with Bellwether’s Canadian finance team, outsourced U.S. accounting resources, and local operating teams. Review bank reconciliations, credit card reconciliations, accounts payable activity, payroll‑related entries, and supporting schedules. Develop and maintain month‑end close checklists and recurring reporting processes. Identify process gaps, control weaknesses, or inefficiencies and recommend practical improvements. Support the development, documentation, and maintenance of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls. Ensure financial records are organized, accurate, complete, and audit‑ready. Audit and External Reporting Support Support the annual audit process and act as a key day‑to‑day contact for audit requests. Prepare audit schedules, working papers, reconciliations, and supporting documentation. Coordinate internally to obtain information required by external auditors. Assist with technical accounting analysis and documentation, including accounting memos where required. Support the CFO in ensuring audit deliverables are completed accurately and on time. Assist with accounting and reporting requirements for acquisitions, integrations, and other corporate initiatives. Budgeting, Forecasting and Analysis Support the annual budget process for Canadian and U.S. entities. Prepare budget‑to‑actual and prior‑period variance analysis. Work with business leaders to understand financial results, key drivers, and operational trends. Prepare financial analysis to support decision‑making, including revenue, expense, profitability, cash flow, and headcount analysis. Assist with forecasting, scenario analysis, and financial modelling as required. Support the CFO and leadership team with ad‑hoc analysis and special projects. Team Coordination and Accounting Support Oversee and coordinate the work of Bellwether’s Canadian accounting administrator, including invoice processing, bank reconciliations, and accounting support activities. Coordinate with outsourced U.S. accounting support resources, including work related to Bellwether’s U.S. operations. Coordinate with local operating teams to transition accounting, AP, reporting, audit support, and finance‑related workflows into a more centralized accounting model. Review work prepared by accounting support resources and provide guidance, feedback, and process direction. Act as a local accounting and finance point of contact while maintaining a functional reporting line to the CFO. Help build a disciplined, consistent, and scalable accounting function across the organization. Work collaboratively with operating leaders, administrators, external accountants, auditors, and other stakeholders. U.S. Operations and Integration Support Support accounting and reporting for Bellwether’s U.S. entities and operations. Assist with the integration of newly acquired businesses into Bellwether’s accounting and reporting processes. Help standardize financial reporting, accounting procedures, budgeting processes, and audit support across Canadian and U.S. operations. Work with local operating teams to understand business drivers, financial results, reporting needs, and process requirements. Assist in identifying opportunities to streamline accounting, reporting, AP, banking, and administrative processes across entities. Support the integration of new entities and jurisdictions as the Company expands geographically, including identifying new tax compliance, reporting, payroll, sales tax, withholding tax, and other local accounting requirements in coordination with external advisors. Other Assist with cash flow tracking and reporting. Support tax compliance processes, including coordination with external tax advisors. Assist with sales tax, withholding tax, payroll‑related accounting, and other compliance matters as required. Support insurance, banking, financing, and vendor‑related analysis as needed. Participate in special projects and other finance initiatives as assigned by the CFO. Professional Skills and Experience Education & Certification: A university degree in accounting, finance, or business is required. A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is preferred, though near‑completion candidates with strong relevant experience may be considered. Experience: Requires 4 to 8 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with a strong preference for public accounting or audit backgrounds. Technical Expertise: Candidates should be proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and have strong hands‑on experience with QuickBooks Online. Experience in preparing financial statements, supporting audits, and handling budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis is essential. Preferred Assets: Experience in financial services or multi‑entity professional environments is an asset, as is familiarity with IFRS, U.S. accounting/tax processes, multi‑entity consolidations, and managing outsourced accounting resources. Personal Attributes Core Traits: The role requires a hands‑on, practical individual who is detail‑oriented, accurate, and disciplined in meeting deadlines. Soft Skills: Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills are necessary, along with the ability to work collaboratively across finance and operations teams. Professionalism: Candidates must possess business maturity, sound judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Compensation & Working conditions Compensation: An annual base salary between US$100,000 and US$115,000, with eligibility for a performance bonus targeted up to 25% of the base salary. Location and Reporting: The preferred location is New York, NY, with a functional reporting line to the Chief Financial Officer based in Canada. Working Arrangement: The position is primarily office‑based, particularly during the initial onboarding and training phase. Occasional remote work may be considered once the candidate is fully established in the role. Travel: Some travel is required to support operations, integrations, audits, and meetings across Canadian and U.S. entities.
