This role offers an experienced civil engineer the opportunity to design and deliver commercial land development and subdivision projects from initial survey through final permitting. You will work closely with project managers to produce high-quality site plans in AutoCAD Civil 3D, coordinate with public agencies, and ensure that constructed work aligns with approved designs. The position provides exposure to every stage of the project lifecycle, frequent client and agency interaction, and a clear path to leading projects as a project manager.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate closely with project managers to develop detailed commercial site plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
• Design residential subdivisions, including layout, grading, drainage, and associated infrastructure.
• Prepare site plan designs and stormwater management plans for suburban commercial and residential developments.
• Perform drainage and detention calculations to support stormwater design and regulatory compliance.
• Develop grading plans and interpret contours to ensure constructible and efficient site designs.
• Work on multiple projects simultaneously, typically managing up to five projects at different phases, with individual project durations of one to two weeks for design tasks.
• Participate in projects from the initial surveying phase through the final stages of permitting, including projects that may span several months.
• Visit job sites as needed to verify that construction matches the design intent and to address field conditions.
• Consult with clients to understand project requirements, present design solutions, and address design-related questions.
• Coordinate with city and government agencies to obtain data, approvals, and information critical to the design and permitting process.
• Communicate effectively with colleagues and other internal teams, including survey and landscape architecture, to ensure cohesive project delivery.
• Support or lead aspects of project management over time, including planning tasks, monitoring progress, and helping to meet project deadlines.
• Maintain a high level of accuracy and quality in all design documents and calculations to meet professional and regulatory standards.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.
• At least 5 years of design experience in commercial land development or site design.
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D for site design and drafting.
• Experience with site plan design, including layout, grading, utilities, and access.
• Exeprience stormwater management, including preparation of stormwater management plans.
• Ability to perform drainage and detention calculations accurately.
• Ability to read, interpret, and design from contours and grading plans.
• Demonstrated experience in civil design for land development, including stormwater, drainage, and grading
• Experience in commercial site development and residential subdivision design.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cedar Rapids, IA.

The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $58.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
