5/16/2026 Salmon Habitat Restoration Event

Join Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group on the King County Parks-owned West Sammamish River Trail to restore salmon habitat. We will spend the event time removing invasive species growing on the riverbank so that recently planted native trees and shrubs can thrive! Upon signing up you will receive a confirmation email from Idealist. You will receive another email on May 13th, the Wednesday before the event with event details (parking, event location, packing list, etc.). For participants under 18: if you plan to volunteer without your parent/guardian and this is your first time volunteering with Mid Sound Fisheries, you need to print and have your parent sign two waivers. Thank you for volunteering with Mid Sound! Please read through this document so we are as prepared as possible for our time together. Our events run rain or shine, but in the event of hazardous weather like severe wind, cold, heat or smoke the Mid Sound staff member leading your event will be in contact via email the morning to officially cancel the event. Plan to check your email before you leave so you receive any updates. If you are a group lead, please be sure you have set up a way to contact your group members the morning of the event if needed. Native Land We acknowledge that this work takes place on the occupied, traditional land of the Coast Salish People who have cared for this land since time immemorial. We recognize that we are not the first stewards of this land and water, and are contributing to the important legacy of this work. To find out more about Native Land, check out this interactive map: How Your Volunteer Service Helps Salmon and Their Ecosystems Puget Sound salmon are in trouble. Two populations of salmonid species in the Sammamish River (Chinook and Steelhead) are listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act. A key problem for Sammamish River salmon is high water temperatures. Planting native trees and shrubs along the banks of the river creates canopy cover and shade, cooling water temperatures. To be able to plant trees we must first remove invasive plants that can outcompete newly planted native trees. Thriving forests and shorelines provide many benefits to our communities as well, like filtering pollution, mitigating erosion and storm damage, and providing places for wildlife to live and for us to connect with nature. What to Expect When you arrive, we will have you (or your parent/guardian) sign in and then gather for an introduction circle. Once we are on the same page with safety and protocols for the day, we will spend time on various restoration tasks that change with the seasons. During fall and winter events we remove invasive species, plant native trees and shrubs, and spread mulch, which helps maintain moisture around native plants and reduces the opportunity for invasive plants to regrow. During late Spring and Summer we do maintenance weed removal in sections of the site that were recently planted. The invasive weed removal is similar to weeding a vegetable garden, as weeds are removed we protect young native plants and will create space to add more plants in the future. For all of these tasks volunteers will use tools provided by Mid Sound, including shovels, rakes, tarps, hand snippers, and more. What to Bring Layers of clothing that can get dirty, that will keep you warm, and will keep you dry Long sleeves and thick pants to protect against thorny plants and weather (shorts not recommended) Jacket Hat Rain Jacket/ Rain Pants Closed-toe shoes are required! (ex: rain boots and hiking boots. No sandals, heels, or flats) A reusable water bottle What We Will Provide Water and light snacks will be provided, please bring extra snacks or a lunch if needed. Work gloves All necessary tools and equipment First-Aid Kit Youth Young people under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Any minors under the age of 18 attending the event without a parent or legal guardian must also bring a printed copy of their signed Mid Sound Youth Waiver and the King County Parks Youth Waiver to the event in order to participate. Bathrooms Bike Pump & Bathrooms, 14580 NE 145th St, Woodinville, WA 98072 The nearest public restrooms are located at the North Shore Athletic Fields, about a 15 minute walk or a 5 minute drive from the restoration site. There are 2 porta-potties at the NSAF parking lot, and a facility with running water just a 1 minute walk north on the paved trail. Safety Personal Protective Equipment at all times: Gloves, closed toed shoes, sturdy clothes, etc. Environmental Hazards: Look up and around for hazards such as branches, roots, holes, slopes, etc. Other Park Users: Watch for walkers, runners, dogs, bikes, etc. and make space on trails for them to pass. Stinging Insects: Bees, wasps, mosquitos, etc. will be active. If you have any allergies to these, we ask that you let a staff member know as a heads up, just in case. Litter: Keep an eye out for litter as we work. Staff will handle any rusty/sharp/hazardous objects. Weather: We will be outside which means exposure to cold/heat/wind, etc. Technology: Keep technology stored safely away. No headphones please, so we are able to hear each other. Photos: We may take photos during the event and will ask your permission beforehand. Tools: Please do not share tools.
