Mid-level Archaeologist

Job Description AECOM is actively seeking a Mid-level Archaeologist III to join our growing Cultural Resources team. This hybrid position will be based out of our Chico, CA office and candidates should be based locally for project assignments. This position is a core member of the Cultural Resources Practice with responsibility for supporting all aspects of project implementation as well as leading teams, tasks and/or full projects. It is a regular, full‑time, salaried position that will report to a Cultural Resources Team Manager. This position may serve as a Field Director and/or Principal Investigator as well as being a crew lead, independently author cultural resource reports, and analyze precontact artifacts, particularly lithics, from the Klamath Basin/Northern California region based on work experience and education. You will be an integral member of our cultural resources team supporting the decommissioning of the Lower Klamath Project, a precedent setting dam removal and salmon habitat restoration project on the Klamath River that includes artifact analysis. Responsibilities Established familiarity with data collection and analysis methodologies related to precontact lithics including specialized studies on typological/technological stages, raw material sourcing via petrography/geochemistry, and use‑wear/residue analysis via microscopy, particularly for lithics from the Klamath Basin and/or Northern California regions. Managing projects with small- to large-scale field efforts (survey, testing, data recovery, and monitoring) and intensive schedules. Managing and executing archival research, technical report writing, state and federal archaeological permitting, data collection and compilation, and GIS mapping. Operating as primary author or senior reviewer, as appropriate. Managing large-scale compliance monitoring projects requiring adherence to permit conditions. Works under supervision of senior staff but is capable of completing all but the most complex tasks with minimal supervision. Supervising personnel in the field, office, and laboratory as needed. Liaising and developing positive relationships with clients and other stakeholders. Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulatory framework, including NEPA, NHPA, and other state and local regulations protecting cultural resources. Organizing data efficiently and clearly. Handling multiple tasks and communicating priorities to manager. Operating as primary point of contact for clients and resource agencies on projects, as needed. Performing client management duties such as recurring status meetings, milestone check‑ins, and day‑to‑day interfacing. Performing project management including overseeing project budgets, invoicing, and project set‑up. Willingness to make significant contributions to the archaeological record of the Lower Klamath Project, the largest dam removal project in the United States. Minimum Requirements BA/BS in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field. 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education in historic and/or precontact archaeology and cultural resources management. Ability to travel for fieldwork assignments. Valid driver’s license. U.S. citizenship required. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field. 8+ years of experience in historic and/or precontact archaeology and cultural resources management. Meets the Secretary of Interior’s professional qualification standards in Archaeology. Experience with implementing Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Relevant field experience in central and/or northern California and/or Western U.S. Advanced knowledge in one or more specialty scientific areas (e.g., lithic or faunal analysis, osteology, historical archaeology). Excellent technical writing skills and strong verbal and written communication skills. Experience and familiarity with tribal representatives for Northern California. Experience leading tasks and/or small projects. Knowledge of regional and local (Northern California) regulations. Proficiency in GPS data collection, ArcGIS and other geospatial software. Experience working with interdisciplinary teams of subject matter experts and planners. Proven ability to lead proposals and win work. Compensation The range for this position is $75,000 to $90,000 per year.
