Job Description
The Staff Pharmacist plays a key role in a highly regulated sterile compounding pharmacy, ensuring that customized medications are prepared, verified, and delivered with exceptional accuracy, quality, and safety. This role focuses on training and developing pharmacy technicians, overseeing sterile compounding activities in accordance with USP 795, 797, and 800, and maintaining strict compliance with standard operating procedures, quality assurance, and regulatory standards. The Staff Pharmacist also provides clinical consultation to patients and healthcare providers, supports production planning, and contributes to a collaborative environment dedicated to patient safety and product integrity.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $64.00 - $68.00/hr.

Job Description
The Staff Pharmacist plays a key role in a highly regulated sterile compounding pharmacy, ensuring that customized medications are prepared, verified, and delivered with exceptional accuracy, quality, and safety. This role focuses on training and developing pharmacy technicians, overseeing sterile compounding activities in accordance with USP 795, 797, and 800, and maintaining strict compliance with standard operating procedures, quality assurance, and regulatory standards. The Staff Pharmacist also provides clinical consultation to patients and healthcare providers, supports production planning, and contributes to a collaborative environment dedicated to patient safety and product integrity.
Responsibilities
- Fully understand and consistently apply Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to sterile compounding activities.
- Train, develop, and monitor pharmacy technicians and other staff within the department to ensure high performance and adherence to procedures.
- Apply and oversee compounding techniques in accordance with USP 795, 797, and 800 to maintain the quality and safety of compounded medications.
- Ensure all quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) tasks are completed accurately and documented in the appropriate environmental platform.
- Process prescriptions using pharmacy software with a strong focus on accuracy, completeness, and timely dispensing.
- Provide consultation to patients and healthcare providers regarding compounded medications and traditional medications, including therapeutic considerations and drug interactions.
- Quarantine expired products and manage returns or destruction of such products in compliance with state laws and regulations.
- Assist in developing and executing the weekly sterile drug production schedule to prioritize and make available critical products based on dispensing history and current needs.
- Follow pharmacy standard operating procedures for medication compounding and preparation, including accurate compounding log documentation, appropriate labeling with correct beyond-use dates (BUD), and controlled substances reconciliation when applicable.
- Manage inventory control and supply management to ensure technicians have the materials and equipment needed to perform their tasks without interruption.
- Support cycle counts, inventory accuracy, and supply chain management activities related to medication and compounding supplies.
- Contribute to production planning and workflow optimization to maximize technician productivity and maintain timely medication preparation.
- Provide excellent customer service to patients, providers, and internal stakeholders, demonstrating strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Maintain discretion and confidentiality when handling sensitive and private health information and pharmacy records.
- Ensure compounded preparations meet acceptable standards of quality, strength, and purity, with appropriate packaging and labeling that align with good pharmacy practices, state regulations, PCAB standards, and current scientific applications.
- Collaborate effectively with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, quality teams, and other healthcare professionals in a fast-paced environment.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as designated or assigned to support pharmacy operations and patient care.
- Report to leadership as required and provide updates on staff performance, workflow efficiency, and quality metrics.
- Active pharmacist license in the state of practice.
- Experience working in a compounding pharmacy environment, with direct involvement in sterile and non-sterile compounding.
- Proficiency in USP 797 standards and hands-on experience in aseptic technique within a cleanroom environment.
- Strong understanding of USP 795, 797, and 800 and their application to sterile compounding and handling of hazardous medications.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to manage staff effectively and efficiently in a pharmacy setting.
- Excellent customer service skills and a genuine desire to serve patients, providers, and the organization.
- Strong communication skills, including professional phone etiquette and the ability to consult clearly with patients and healthcare providers.
- High integrity, dependability, and a strong focus on quality and accuracy in all pharmacy activities.
- Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to maintain accuracy in prescription processing, compounding, and documentation.

- Ability to compound preparations of acceptable quality, strength, and purity with appropriate packaging and labeling in line with good pharmacy practices, state regulations, PCAB standards, and current scientific applications.
- Competence in using pharmacy software for prescription processing, data entry, medication refills, and inventory-related tasks.
- Knowledge of drug interactions, therapeutic considerations, and appropriate medication use in various care settings.
- Ability to work effectively in hospital, retail, inpatient, and health care pharmacy environments, including intravenous therapy and medication filling.
- Experience in hospital pharmacy, retail pharmacy, or inpatient pharmacy settings is beneficial.
- Experience in intravenous therapy (IV) compounding and sterile preparation is an advantage.
- Experience with inventory management, cycle counts, and inventory accuracy in a pharmacy or health care setting.
- Familiarity with supply chain management principles related to pharmaceutical products and compounding supplies.
- Experience with production planning and workflow optimization in a pharmacy environment.
- Knowledge of prior authorization processes and coordination with healthcare providers and payers.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, regulated environment.
