LATERAL POLICE OFFICER

Job Title Lateral Police Officer – City of Lynnwood Incentive Program Upon hire, a total incentive of $25,000 will be paid in installments: $10,000 following employment start, $5,000 upon achieving solo status, $5,000 upon successful completion of probation, and $5,000 upon completion of two years of service. Lateral officers are eligible only once. Vacation accrual will match prior experience up to seven (7) years of service. Salary (Base 2026) Step 1: Hourly $51.14 – $4,091.49 per pay period – $106,378.69 annual Step 2: Hourly $55.51 – $4,440.41 per pay period – $115,450.61 annual Step 3: Hourly $57.76 – $4,620.79 per pay period – $120,140.59 annual Step 4: Hourly $60.11 – $4,808.47 per pay period – $125,020.27 annual Step 5: Hourly $61.96 – $4,956.98 per pay period – $128,881.38 annual Responsibilities Provide service to citizens to safeguard lives, property, and constitutional rights. Acquire and maintain knowledge of state, county, and city laws and enforce them impartially. Understand administrative policy and execute service programs within your area of responsibility. Secure pertinent information before duty participation. Inspect and maintain equipment. Ensure civil treatment and protection of all persons within police authority. Maintain firearm proficiency. Comply with all safety standards and regulations. Work toward departmental and divisional objectives. Gather, submit, and maintain intelligence information for investigations. Stay informed about new laws and court decisions affecting duties. Respond to crime and traffic accident scenes, protecting the scene and evidence. Conduct preliminary investigations until relieved by a detective or beyond which case outcome is not jeopardized. Identify crime, public disorder, and other conditions and develop strategies. Resolve neighborhood crime and disorder problems. Maintain radio communication during duty and promptly respond to calls. Familiarize with city and assignment areas. Provide first aid and rescue services at scenes and emergencies. Engage in traffic direction, crowd control, demonstrations, riots, and disasters. Defend persons from imminent harm and enforce protective service requests. Maintain daily activity records and present testimony at hearings. Apply legal discretion to actions such as no action, warning, or arrest. Enforce moving violations and parking regulations to ensure traffic flow. Recommend improvements to operational effectiveness. Encourage voluntary compliance with the law. Deliver presentations to civic groups promoting police image. Evaluate officer performance and complete training program reports. Required Physical Traits Reach overhead, above shoulders, and horizontally. Run, walk over uneven surfaces, climb stairs, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist, and turn. Engage in heavy lifting, physical agility, and stamina. Speak and exchange information clearly. Have at least 12 months of full‑time paid law‑enforcement experience within the last 36 months. Have satisfactorily completed the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Officer course or meet equivalent standards. Disqualifiers for Position of Police Officer Integrity Misstatement of fact, significant admission, or inconsistent statements during background processes. Forgery, alteration, or omission of material facts on an application. Criminal conviction involving perjury, false statements, or moral turpitude. Recent affiliation with groups advocating violent overthrow of the U.S. government or contrary to public safety. Academic Dismissal Under current academic dismissal from any college or university initiated within the last two years. Dismissed from a CJTC basic law‑enforcement academy without demonstrated improvement; resubmission to another academy rescinds. Judgment Under Pressure Administrative or criminal convictions for assault under authority or civil rights violations. Failure to report witnessed criminal conduct by another officer. Illegal Use or Possession of Drugs Adult use/possession of hallucinogenic drugs within seven years prior. Adult use/possession of other illegal drugs (including cocaine) within three years prior. Adult use/possession of drugs while in law‑enforcement/military capacity. Manufacture or cultivation of illegal substances. Failure to disclose personal illegal drug use. Positive drug test during hiring. Employment History Termination or disciplinary action for misconduct, ethics violations, criminal conduct, falsification, or moral turpitude within five years of application.
