Director MICU - Critical Care - Physician - MSH - Manhattan, NY

DescriptionThe Division of Pulmonary, and Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center has a stellar history in lung disease, clinical care, and research. Excellence in respiratory and critical care, research and teaching is the sine qua non for an outstanding Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. The Division is in the process of attracting clinicians and researchers of the highest quality to develop and promote translational clinical programs that bring personalized, cutting-edge approaches to patients with respiratory disease and critical illness. These efforts will attract residents of Manhattan and the Tri-State area to seek out specialized outpatient care from clinical leaders at Mount Sinai and to seek out Mount Sinai’s inpatient service for multidisciplinary management of pulmonary disease, pulmonary hypertension, and critical illness. As a Faculty member of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, you will be expected to provide the best quality of care for our patients and to contribute to the Division's research, clinical and training programs. In your clinical roles as a Pulmonary Hypertension specialist and Critical Care physician in the Division, you will be expected to provide outstanding, state of the art therapy to our patients. Your role will also include teaching students and trainees the concepts of pulmonary and critical care physiology and medicine, and where appropriate, mentoring these individuals in the art and science of medicine. In support of the Division's Mission Statement, an aspect of the care you provide will be to educate our patients about cutting edge treatments for critical care, deepening their understanding, and allowing them the freedom to seek appropriate care and treatment as needed. The Institute for Critical Care Medicine (ICCM) at Mount Sinai Health System is one of the nation's leading Critical Care Organizations and hosts one of the largest Critical Care Training Programs in North America. ICCM oversees all aspects of critical care within the Health System, including clinical, operational, research, and educational endeavors. Attracting an array of Intensivists and Researchers from diverse clinical backgrounds, ICCM fosters collaboration to meet the goals of delivering exceptional patient care and advancing critical care as a discipline.As an ICCM Intensivist, you will provide top-tier critical care across the Mount Sinai Health System, spanning both ICU environments and broader hospital services. Simultaneously, as a faculty member, you will teach, mentor, and empower the next generation of critical care professionals and develop innovative research initiatives. Your dedication to excellence will be the driving force behind our mission of delivering outstanding patient care in critical care medicine.ResponsibilitiesCLINICALa. To provide state-of-the-art, evidence-based, critical care at Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) by investigating, diagnosing, and treating acutely ill patients. This may include performing treatments and procedures at the bedside, such as, airway maintenance/ intubation, bronchoscopy, cardioversion, point of care ultrasound, central line insertions, ACLS, and others in order to manage critically ill patients in the ICUs.b. You will have clinical duties as a full-time intensivist. ICCM provides 24/7 intensivist coverage across Mount Sinai Health System. You will have an appointment as Professor in the Department of Medicine. You will be a member of the Institute for Critical Care Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital.c. As a .80 clinical FTE critical care faculty you are responsible for 10.4 shifts per month with a combination of day and night shifts. Your monthly shift count will be allocated according to your critical care clinical effort. d. Write detailed medical records for all critical care services and procedures provided to patients and submit to Charge Capture in a timely manner. All notes must be in accordance with the MSHS Assurance and Compliance Services Department’s policies.e. Achieve an annual work-relative value unit (wRVU) target based on billable critical care services and procedures. You may qualify for a productivity bonus if the wRVUs generated exceed your annual target. f. Once minimum monthly requirements are achieved, there will be an opportunity to work extra shifts for additional compensation. To receive payments for these additional shifts, you must complete Mount Sinai’s attestation form and submit it to the Administrator of the Department within five (5) business days of providing coverage for the per-diem session. Payment for each service will be made in a lump sum within 60 days of your service if the faculty attestation form is submitted timely.g. Participate in clinical continuing education courses and workshops to expand competency in treatment and procedures.ADMINISTRATIVESection Chief of Medical Critical Care, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine1. You will have health system responsibilities for academic and educational activities of the Division’s critical care programs in the Health System that will include faculty recruitment, evaluation, and retention; and oversight of education programs for trainees and students in the medical intensive care units.Director, ICCM Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), MSH The leadership of the Department, ICCM, and Mount Sinai Hospital will work with you to expand medical critical care capacity as dictated by patient volume and programmatic goals. a. Provide administrative leadership for the MICU, development of its faculty, and development of a coverage schedule. b. To provide state of the art, evidence based critical care services to patients on the MICU and Division Consult Services. You will have clinical duties in Medical Critical Care services as a full-time physician, as directed by ICCM Director and Department Chair. c. Participate in committees and administrative functions to fully support efficient performance of the MICU program, Department and Medical Center in areas pertaining to scope of responsibility. d. Perform appropriate due diligence, in cooperation with Departmental leadership and Medical Center administration, in planning replacement or acquisition of equipment or technology. e. Fully support the implementation of quality initiatives of the Departments and Medical Center.QUALITYa. Obtain exceptional clinical outcomes by promoting safety and quality through evidence-based medicine and excellent multidisciplinary communication. Focus on reducing the length of stay and excess days in patients with respiratory failure and tracheostomy. b. Achieve several individual and team-based metrics for patient care which align with ICCM's quality incentive. These metrics include, but are not limited to: hand hygiene targets, CLABSI and CAUTI targets, central line and foley catheter utilization targets.c. Promote safe, quality, and equitable care by participation in unit/team-specific quality improvement projects (USQI) and unit/team based diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) projects. These projects are conducted on an annual basis and progress is presented in the monthly ICCM Patient, Safety, and Quality Initiatives (PSQI) meeting. Presentations must be submitted 1 week in advance of scheduled PSQI meetings. These projects are also part of the ICCM quality incentive program.EDUCATIONCandidates must meet the following educational requirements to ensure compliance with ACGME requirements for core clinical faculty:1. Ongoing Medical Education: Maintain current certification and licensure.2. Teaching and Mentorship: commitment to teaching and mentoring the critical care fellows as evidenced by:- Attendance at fellow conferences.- Teaching in fellowship training days, such as bootcamps, ultrasound courses, and SIM courses.- Give two lectures per academic year to the fellows 3. Scholarly Activity: Engagement in scholarly activities (at least two, within every 3 years): - Presentations (extramural, i.e., outside MSHC).- Publications –research abstract, research paper, review article, systematic review article, editorial, book chapter, book, case report, etc.- Grand rounds (1 every 2 years)- Serve on professional committees, educational organizations, journal reviewer, editorial board member- Creation of curricula, evaluation tools, didactic educational activities, or electronic educational materials- Innovations in education4. Participation in ACGME-required faculty development programs:- Registration + Attendance at the annual Mount Sinai GME meeting.- Completion of GME snippet (a focused learning activity for faculty)5. Contribute to ongoing fellowship program assessment and improvement:- Completion of fellow rotation evaluations in a timely manner.- Participation in biannual faculty meetings to discuss fellow performance.- Participation in Program Evaluation Committee (PEC).RESEARCHYou are expected to participate in research activities including clinical trials and drafting manuscripts for academic journals. Research initiatives should be clinical in nature, data-driven, and may include participation in specific ICU or team-based projects. These duties may be modified by the ICCM Director based on Institutional needs.QualificationsCompensation range from 350K to 450K (not including bonuses / incentive compensation or benefits).Salary Disclosure Information:Mount Sinai Health System provides a salary range to comply with the New York City law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements.
