Postdoctoral Fellow in the Dept of Environmental & Occupational Health

Position Summary A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, under the direction of Dr. Drew Capone. This USDA grant‑funded position is funded for three years, with potential renewal after the first year depending on performance and funding availability. The position includes benefits such as a retirement contribution and health insurance. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. Responsibilities Conduct environmental surveillance of surface water and blow flies for avian influenza in Indiana. Perform field work to collect environmental samples. Carry out laboratory analysis using culture‑dependent and culture‑independent approaches. Manage and analyze data, including quantitative data analysis. Lead studies, mentor undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. students. Design experiments and generate peer‑reviewed publications. Participate in travel to scientific meetings and receive formal training in grant writing, research ethics, rigor and reproducibility, and research management. Develop independent research interests and write independent research proposals. Qualifications PhD in environmental health, environmental engineering, environmental science, microbiology, or a related scientific field. Experience with molecular microbiology methods such as nucleic acid extraction, qPCR, and dPCR. Experience with metagenomic sequencing and bioinformatics. Fieldwork experience, including environmental sampling. Strong written and oral communication skills. Interest in mentoring undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. students.
