Job Description

Title: SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER File 540

Reports to: Principal

Job Objectives: Provides interpretive services to help students with hearing and/or communication disabilities achieve productive learning experiences. Note: Duties may require traveling to various sites throughout the district as scheduled.

Minimum Valid Ohio interpreter for the hearing impaired license.

Qualifications: Interpretation of Transliteration Certificate in American Sign Language (ASL).

• Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., a negative tuberculosis test, etc.)
• Documented Evidence of a clear criminal record.
• Valid Ohio Department of Education Permit appropriate for the assignment.
• Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgin signed English (PSE), and Exact English (SEE).

• Strong voicing skills including fluency in reception and expression.
• Skilled in use of alternative forms of communication.
• Self-directed and able to learn required skills for the position.
• Congenial disposition and strong interpersonal skills.
• Observe professional code of ethics of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

Responsibilities The following duties are representative of performance expectations. A and Essential reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions.

Functions:

• Provides interpretive services for assigned students. Uses the communication method(s) that best meet the needs of the individual (e.g., sign language, cued speech, finger spelling, writing, etc.).
• Upholds board policies and follows administrative procedures.
• Promotes a favorable image of the school district.
• Complies with state model policies and procedures for the education of students identified as having a disability. Works with staff to insure that services are provided in the least restrictive educational environment.
• Offers help when students ask or their behavior suggests they need assistance.
• Avoids being intrusive. Solves student concerns discreetly.
• Supports an inclusive educational environment. Helps students with disabilities participate in appropriate peer group activities as directed.
• Helps students with remedial and/or enrichment activities. Reinforces materials introduced by the teacher. Maintains a positive learning environment.
• Performs travel training and job coaching activities when assigned.
• Helps students use adaptive equipment (e.g., hearing aides, voice amplification devices, communication boards, etc.). Checks equipment to ensure that it is operating properly.
• Positions students to take full advantage of each learning environment (e.g., line-of-sight, proximity to equipment, height of work surfaces, etc.).
• Helps teachers implement classroom modifications, behavioral intervention strategies, and other activities identified in Individualized Education Plans (IEP).
• Modifies test protocols as directed (e.g., reads test question, transcribes student responses, provides additional time, etc.).
• Assists teaching staff with instructional modifications, classroom adjustments and/or other methods, that support the attainment of educational goals for assigned students.
• Prepares and conducts in-service training and orientation programs, as requested. Serves as resource for teachers and administrators.

May be requested to monitor ill students until a parent/guardian arrives. Strives to develop rapport with others. Respects personal privacy. Maintains the confidentiality of privileged information. Takes precautions to ensure student safety. Does not leave students unsupervised. Maintains high standards for student conduct. Upholds the student conduct code. Works with the classroom teacher to address persistent behavior problems. Promotes the proper use of school property. Reports student discipline problems, vandalism, or other related concerns. Participates in staff meetings and professional growth activities as directed. Accepts responsibility for personal decisions and conduct. Serves as a positive role model for others. Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.
