Job Summary The Nuclear Medicine technologist assists with providing safe, age‑appropriate care to patients by performing all exams provided by the department per procedures. Possesses knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study. Performs a wide variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in the utilization of equipment for diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases. Can independently perform job functions and set up equipment to provide imaging service and position patients for procedures. Core Responsibilities And Essential Functions Patient Care Verify proper clinician order for procedure. Obtain complete clinical history, gather examination data, and assess for contraindicating conditions. Follow established procedures for the administration of radiopharmaceuticals to prevent patient deterioration or undue pain. Ensure all studies have proper patient identification and correct use of right‑ and left‑hand markers. Review images for clinically acceptable results and release patients. Respond to emergency situations, restock the crash cart, and maintain life support equipment. Assist other technologists in all modalities when needed. Observe patient condition and evaluate situations requiring physician intervention to prevent deterioration. Verify correct identity of patient using two unique identifiers prior to performing a procedure per hospital policy. Maintain patient privacy, comfort, and dignity throughout the exam. Demonstrate competence in selection and application of procedures, equipment, supplies, and techniques based on patient age. Organize schedule, time, and priorities to ensure required activities begin and conclude within designated time frames. Follow physician instructions when assisting with procedures and exams. Use critical thinking skills. Engage in dialogue with patient/family. Ask clarifying questions and seek clarification on ambiguous orders. Understand, demonstrate, and document pre‑procedural verification and Time‑Out process when appropriate. Demonstrate and understand pre‑ and post‑procedural care. Prep the patient for the procedure and demonstrate sterile technique. Maintain competency with venipuncture. Equipment Adjust technique to ensure the patient receives the best study possible while maintaining image quality. Report problems regarding malfunctioning equipment to supervisor or service provider for timely correction. Cleans, disinfects, and maintains equipment in accordance with infection control policy and department cleaning schedule. Education and Communications Patiently and clearly explain the purpose and nature of the exam to the patient prior to starting the procedure, minimizing anxiety and encouraging cooperation using AIDET. Ensure that patient questions, concerns, or contraindications are satisfactorily addressed, notifying physician when this cannot be accomplished prior to the procedure. Participate in the orientation and training of departmental employees. Complete required documentation concisely, legibly, and with precise terminology. Read email each day scheduled to work and follow through with assignments. Complete mandatory departmental and hospital‑wide education without prompting. Quality Control Consistently produce acceptable images as evidenced by radiologist feedback and quality audits. Ensure that equipment is fully operational prior to each use by checking for proper calibration and operating deficiencies. Send all studies to PACS immediately after completion and print CDs as needed. Print and scan studies reported after hours by teleradiography into PACS, if applicable. Complete all studies in RIS before completing in PACS. Print completed log sheet from teleradiography and submit to the Radiologist, if applicable. Operations Restock linens and supplies and maintain the NM department in clean and orderly condition. Transport patients, position them, and help them on and off the procedure table. Perform patient charging activities on the day the service is rendered. Apply supportive and immobilization devices and equipment. Lend knowledge and assistance to others as needed and routinely without prompting. Perform routine clerical and support duties as needed to ensure continuity and quality of services. Keep supervisor informed of all responsibilities on an ongoing basis, ensuring prompt notification of problems or potential problems. Maintain an individual productivity rate equal to other co‑workers. Operate NM equipment within the department. Maintain Joint Commission standards and any other regulatory agency standards. Perform other duties as assigned, including call when necessary. Comply with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct. Required Minimum Education Accredited Program in Radiologic Technology. Required Minimum License(s) And Certification(s) ARRT‑R – ARRT Radiography or CNMT – Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist. BLS‑I – Basic Life Support Instructor or BLS – Basic Life Support or ARC‑BLS – American Red Cross Basic Life Support. Required Minimum Experience Minimum 1 year experience in a clinical setting caring for patients (may include clinical rotations). – Required. Minimum 1 year Nuclear Medicine experience – Preferred. Required Minimum Skills Excellent communication skills for frequent verbal and written communications with physicians, patients, visitors, departmental staff, and nursing staff. Ability to present and discuss clinical information regarding job responsibilities routinely. Ability to explain or give directions to maintain goodwill and obtain cooperation with all contacts. Function independently and under pressure while actively participating in a team environment. Exhibit excellent customer service skills at all times. Perform effectively in a stressful and fast‑paced work environment. Prioritize appropriately and multitask throughout the work shift. Comply with all hospital policies and established practices, protocols, and procedures of the position, department, and applicable professional standards. Assist with providing safe, age‑appropriate care to patients by performing all exams provided by the department per protocols. Have the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study. Perform a wide variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in the utilization of equipment for diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases.
