Job Title: Registered Nurse or RN Resident Request ID: 2026-0451 Location: VMC Main Campus, Renton, WA Department: Surgery Shift: Days Type: Full Time FTE: 1 Salary Range: $46.94 - $85.76 per hour, DOE Job Overview The staff RN is a licensed professional who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame. This individual provides safe, quality care to these patients utilizing the nursing process as the basis for clinical practice. Prerequisites BSN preferred Current RN license in Washington Successful completion of a graduate nurse residency program orientation or 6 months’ experience as an RN AHA BLS for healthcare providers required Preferred for Advancement to Charge Nurse Role BSN Two years’ experience in clinical nursing/leadership in the area of responsibility Unit specific prerequisites - see addendum General Qualifications Demonstrates leadership skills and the ability to lead and manage a team, utilize clinical judgment, inquiry, innovation, and systems thinking Effective oral and written communication Adheres to the Professional Appearance Policy Community‑centered, compassionate interpersonal skills for diverse and vulnerable populations Effective communication and work with all age groups Excellent customer service skills in a caring environment Familiarity with ANA Standards and the Nurse Practice Act Competence in electronic documentation, order entry, and e‑mail Self‑directed in continuing education and research Physical and Mental Demands Safe patient handling including lifting up to 40 lbs and use of patient‑lifting equipment Ability to stoop, bend, reach, crouch, squat, and stand/walk for extensive periods Full body range of motion with manual and finger dexterity, eye‑hand coordination Corrected vision, hearing, color discrimination within normal range Performance Responsibilities Assesses, guides, directs, and facilitates workflow on the unit Make staff assignments reflecting patient acuity, continuity, competency, and admit/transfer/discharge needs Mentor staff, float, and agency personnel on policies, procedures, and goals Integrate new and agency staff into the unit culture Serve as a leader, role model, and clinical resource for unit staff Identify resource RN for LPN, PCA, and MST as needed Monitor and evaluate nursing care by direct observation, consultation, and patient rounds Assess unit/environmental safety and address deficiencies Maintain awareness of Joint Commission standards, state codes, and practice acts; monitor documentation and compliance Respond to patient and family concerns/complaints Report significant events to supervisors following chain of command Provide input into clinical staff performance appraisals and document concerns Ensure adequate coverage for breaks Monitor and adjust staffing during shifts and forecast needs for following shift Maintain competency in direct patient care and team leadership Collaborate with bed placement and clinical resources to expedite placement Unit Specific Requirements (Selected Examples) Emergency Department: ACLS & PALS within 3 months, NIHSS within 3 months, TNCC within 12 months, ENPC within 12 months; 1 year experience or ED residency completion preferred Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit: ACLS & PALS within 3 months; preferred 2 years med/surg experience with telemetry Endoscopy: ACLS within 3 months; preferred 6 months experience in endoscopy or 1 year med/surg Critical Care: ACLS within 3 months; NIHSS within 3 months; minimum 1 year emergency/critical care experience Labor & Delivery: NRP within 3 months; ACLS within 3 months; 6 months experience or residency completion preferred Medical‑Surgical: 3 months experience or residency; one year overall experience preferred Oncology: ONS Oncology Fundamentals and Chemotherapy Biotherapy courses within 3 months; Oncology Certification within 3 years for chemotherapy administrators #J-18808-Ljbffr
