Essential Skills and Competencies Data Storage Fundamentals: A solid understanding of various data storage options, including Amazon S3, Amazon RDS, Amazon Redshift, and DynamoDB. Database Design and Optimization: Proficiency in designing efficient database schemas, indexing strategies, and query optimization. Big Data Technologies: Familiarity with big data tools like Amazon EMR, Athena, and Glue for processing large datasets. ETL (Extract, Transform, Load): Experience with ETL processes and tools for data integration. Data Modeling: Ability to create effective data models that align with business requirements. Cloud Knowledge: A deep understanding of cloud computing concepts, especially related to Amazon Web Services (AWS). Infrastructure Design: Ability to design and implement cloud solutions, considering scalability, security, and performance. Experience: Practical firsthand experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS. Best Practices: Familiarity with best practices for deploying and managing cloud resources, resource groups, resource tagging, IAC. Cloud Governance: Knowledge of governance principles within the AWS environment where you’ll oversee PNC’s AWS AI/ML & Data Lab. AWS Services: Strong knowledge of AWS services, especially those related to data, such as S3, RDS, Redshift, Athena, EMR, Sagemaker, and Glue. Serverless Architecture: Understanding of serverless computing using services like Lambda. High Availability and Scalability: Designing highly available, fault‑tolerant, and scalable solutions. Data Encryption: Knowledge of encryption mechanisms for data at rest and in transit. Access Control: Implementing fine‑grained access controls using IAM. Compliance: Ensuring data compliance with industry standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA). AWS Glue Data Catalog: Proficiency in setting up and managing data catalogs. Metadata Management: Understanding how to maintain metadata for data lineage and governance. CloudWatch Metrics: Set up monitoring for data‑related services. Performance Tuning: Optimize data pipelines, queries, and storage for performance. Responsibilities Designs, develops and optimizes highly complex, specialized data warehouses, with flexible and scalable data and ETL architecture, to support business users and Business Intelligence (BI) applications. Analyzes business intelligence data and makes recommendations for data warehouse growth and integration for the enterprise. Works with IT and business customers to develop requirements for designing the overall data warehouse architecture. Provides support and technical guidance to ensure architecture and framework are aligned with BI application needs. Leads and consults on the implementation and integration of data warehouses; ensures data is current and meets organizational quality and integrity standards. Logical Data Modeling – Knowledge of and the ability to identify, create and document activities, tasks, processes and data requirements for a particular system under design. Organizational Leadership – Knowledge of, and ability to use strategies and skills to enlist others in setting, embracing and achieving objectives. Problem Solving – Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply this knowledge appropriately to diverse situations. Requirements Analysis – Knowledge of methods and techniques to elicit, analyze and record required business functionality and non‑functionality requirements; ability to analyze these requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project. Work Experience Roles at this level typically require a university / college degree. Higher level education such as a Masters degree, PhD, or certifications is desirable. Industry relevant experience is typically 8+ years. Specific certifications are often required. In lieu of a degree, a comparable combination of education, job specific certification(s), and experience (including military service) may be considered.
