Assistant Director for Prevention & Health Education

Assistant Director for Prevention & Health Education Working Title: Assistant Director for Prevention & Health Education, Permanent - Full-time , 40 hours per week. Salary Range: $55,000 - $60,000. Work Location: Waddell Center for Student Health & Wellbeing, Charlotte, NC. Work Schedule: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm or 8:30 am – 5:30 pm, Monday – Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours required. One telework day per week is allowed. Primary Purpose of Department The Center for Wellness Promotion (CWP) uses a public health model and evidence‑informed prevention and health promotion strategies to help students make informed decisions about their personal health and well‑being. The multidisciplinary team addresses interpersonal violence, substance use, recovery from substance use disorders, sexual health, suicide prevention, mental health, and general wellness, aspiring to empower the university community to develop healthier attitudes and behaviors. Primary Purpose of Position Under the direction of the Associate Director for Prevention and Wellness Initiatives, the Assistant Director leads and manages a team of peer health educators, overseeing their training, program implementation, and overall performance while promoting healthy behaviors and wellness initiatives on campus. Responsibilities Program Implementation and Management Manage daily operations of peer health educators to support the Center for Wellness Promotion and the overall Health and Wellbeing Unit. Implement and evaluate evidence-informed initiatives related to general wellness and safer sex/sexual health by assessing effectiveness of campus and community partnerships. Assist the Associate Director with fiscal resources, including student payroll and program-area operational expenses. Propose, track, and ensure the approved budget for Peer Educator salaries in the Peer Educator fund/budget. Coordinate and oversee delivery of prevention programs and presentation requests across campus, including weekly tabling events such as Wellness Wednesdays and What's Your Plan A. Update, deliver, and oversee peer educators presenting educational materials (e.g., What's Your Plan A, Between Me & You). Oversee inventory of safer sex supplies, managing donations and purchases; fill individual and bulk orders. Stay abreast of current trends, research, and best practices in health promotion to continuously enhance program offerings. Collect and review data related to health promotion programs to measure effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. Leadership and Supervision Supervise and mentor a graduate student employee and a team of 8–15 Peer Health Educators. Provide ongoing daily support and guidance, addressing concerns, facilitating feedback, and fostering professional development. Assign peer educators to specific health promotion initiatives based on skills and interests. Monitor performance and address concerns related to program delivery. Monitor program and presentation delivery to ensure high quality, consistent, and accurate messaging. Identify, recruit, and hire qualified students as peer educators (typically recruited in the Spring for the fall semester). Create a collaborative team environment and culture. Oversee scheduling and payroll of Peer Health Educators. Outreach and Collaboration Coordinate outreach events to raise awareness and promote healthy behaviors within the university community. Support the Associate Director in fostering partnerships with other campus departments and Student Affairs units to coordinate prevention efforts. Implement goals and targets set by the Associate Director/CWP to reach specific student populations such as First Gen, Graduate, and International Students. Establish and maintain relationships with external partners, community organizations, and agencies. Peer Educator Training and Student Professional Development Implement comprehensive training for new peer educators covering prevention strategies, communication skills, group facilitation, and relevant health information. Implement the NASPA Certified Peer Educator (CPE) training, teaching or guiding students through the self‑paced program to become certified. Coordinate departmental presentation opportunities for ongoing training and professional development of peer educators. General Administration Contribute to a positive, friendly work environment that encourages collaboration, teamwork, and professionalism. Attend staff meetings, in-service education sessions, and other divisional or departmental meetings. Prepare monthly reports highlighting program area key metrics and outcomes. Serve on University committees as needed or assigned. Collaborate with the Health & Wellbeing Unit and other Division of Student Affairs initiatives/programs as required. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or CWP Leadership Team. Minimum Education & Experience Master's degree in Public Health, Health Education, Health Promotion, or a related field (e.g., Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education). Two or more years of experience in health promotion (graduate assistantship experience may be considered). Proven experience in health education program development, implementation, and evaluation. Experience managing and developing student employees and volunteers. Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills. Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience Two or more years of work experience in health promotion focused on general wellness and sexual health in a higher education setting. Strong understanding of public health principles and evidence-based practices. Familiarity with current health issues and trends relevant to young adults and the university population. Knowledge of current data, research, and best practices in college health promotion. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to train and mentor peer health educators. Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to motivate and empower student employees.
