Description
The Sullivan County Department of Corrections is seeking a dedicated, professional, and motivated individual to serve as a Corporal. This leadership position is responsible for supervising correctional officers, maintaining the safety and security of the facility, and ensuring policies and procedures are followed.
Examples of Duties
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, integrity, sound judgment, and a commitment to public service.
1. Maintain correctional facility security, supervise shift change, and participate in the physical count of inmates as required. 2. Supervise and participate in the feeding, medical care and general well-being of inmates and supervise visiting hours. 3. Supervise, assign and review the work of staff on an assigned shift and in the absence of the officer in charge, act as officer in charge. 4. Receive newly arrived prisoners, ensure that all admission policies and procedures are followed, ensure proper documentation is received and coordinate bail arrangements. 5. Ensure inmate release is consistent with department policies and procedures, notify all pertinent parties or departments. 6. Conduct inmate transports from place to place. 7. Maintain effective communications between subordinate staff and superior officers. 8. Ensure that all staff meet and abide by established policies and procedures, report violations to superior officer, support and use established chain of command. 9. Support and promote the Mission Statement of the Sullivan County Department of Corrections. Other Functions 1. Follow all Federal, State and local laws; follow all Department policies and procedures regarding assigned duties. 2. Is accessible by telephone when not on duty in the facility. 3. Perform other duties as required. Typical Qualifications
A candidate for this position must be a high school graduate or equivalent. The incumbent should have a minimum of 2 years of correctional experience. An associate's degree in Criminal Justice could substitute for one 1 year of experience. A candidate for this position must have knowledge of the principles of correctional institution management, knowledge of criminal codes, knowledge of department policies and procedures have the ability to use computers, manage difficult people, manage stress and be able to communicate effectively. A candidate should possess a valid driver's license, have a valid certification in CPR/AED, first aid, correctional officer and defensive tactics. Must be able to develop and maintain effective listening and observation skills. Supplemental Information Physical & Mental Requirements
Work is performed primarily at the Department of Corrections. The incumbent works in a moderately noisy setting and is exposed to fumes and/or airborne particles and moving mechanical parts up to 2/3 of work time. There is a regular risk of personal injury when violent/hostile situations require crisis intervention and emergency response. Physical demands generally involve standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms and tasting or smelling up to 2/3 of the time; use of hands and sitting up to of the time and talking, listening or hearing more than 2/3 of the time. Occasionally weight is lifted with force exerted up to 30 lbs. Seldom is weight lifted or force exerted up to 100 lbs. Close vision requirements are necessary in order to observe contraband, avoid injury and check for weapons. Equipment used includes an automobile, office machines, personal computers, medical equipment to administer first aid, OC spray, handcuffs and other restraints.
