Summary Position located in Joshua Tree National Park, in the Division of Interpretation, Resource Education and Volunteers. Career‑Seasonal appointments are permanent and include the same benefits as Career appointments but work only approximately 25 pay periods annually. Otherwise the rank is in non‑pay status. Responsibilities Develop and present interpretive and educational programs (talks, tours, demonstrations, curriculum‑based programs) that facilitate visitor understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of park natural, cultural, and historical resources. Conduct independent research on park themes and resources to ensure accuracy and relevance in interpretive products, programs, and visitor information services. Mentor newer staff and provide training on accessing research materials. Provide visitor services that support resource protection, including safety information, rule explanations, and compliance promotion. Offer comprehensive orientation information to help visitors plan safe visits, and remain attuned to weather changes, especially late summer temperatures exceeding 120° F. Develop, maintain, and deliver informational and interpretive media such as exhibits, written materials, digital content, and visual aids that support park communication and learning objectives. Comment on draft exhibit text to ensure accurate and focused messaging and collaborate with park teams to keep messaging current. Collaborate with park divisions, partners, and community organizations to support interpretive programming, outreach, and resource education initiatives. Act as secondary liaison to the cooperating association and plan future visitor‑facing offerings. Work with local astronomical societies and other park partners to plan large‑scale public events. Supervise the Operations Branch, oversee all staff and visitor‑center functions, and manage seasonal hiring, schedule balancing, and project initiation. Develop and manage projects that support division and park goals and provide funding to maintain operations. Education Submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution, including name, school, credit hours, course level, major(s), and GPA or class ranking. Transcripts may be non‑official but official transcripts must be provided if education is used to qualify. Foreign credentials must be evaluated by a private organization or awarded equivalent credit at a U.S. accredited college or university. Requirements U.S. citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to register under the Selective Service Registration Act is disqualifying for males. Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program is required. Applicants with previous federal civil‑service positions in the last 52 weeks must meet time‑in‑grade requirements. All applicants, including former federal employees, must satisfy the time‑in‑grade requirement by the closing date. One‑year probationary period will be conducted to evaluate fitness and suitability for continued employment. Probation ends automatically unless the agency confirms continued employment. Evaluations Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of qualifications listed in the vacancy announcement, resume and supporting documents, responses to the application questionnaire, and required assessments. Competencies assessed include Creative Thinking, Team Building, and Writing. Additional required documentation includes most recent performance appraisal, awards earned within the last five years, and, where applicable, SF‑50s illustrating time‑in‑grade and rank. Other Information The work is normally sedentary and requires long periods of stationary work at a computer workstation. Moderate physical exertion is required for field visits. Working conditions may include dirty, dusty, cold, hot, wet, or otherwise uncomfortable environments. The National Park Service may allow telework only during emergencies or natural disasters.
