Volunteer Firefighter

The Volunteer Firefighter is responsible for responding to fire, rescue, hazardous materials, and medical emergencies, protecting lives and property while ensuring compliance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, local regulations, and departmental policies. This role requires training, physical fitness, and a commitment to serving the community in a professional and ethical manner. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Respond to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, rescues, and other emergency situations as dispatched. Suppress fires using hoselines, nozzles, ladders, ventilation techniques, and fire extinguishers in accordance with NFPA 1001 standards. Operate and maintain firefighting tools, equipment, and personal protective gear, ensuring compliance with NFPA 1851 (PPE maintenance) and NFPA 1932 (ladders). Perform search and rescue operations, including victim extrication and forcible entry, per NFPA 1670 guidelines. Provide basic first aid, CPR, and emergency medical care as per training and certification (EMT, First Responder, etc.). Participate in regular training, drills, and continuing education to maintain NFPA 1403-compliant live fire training and skill proficiency. Assist with fire prevention, public education programs, and community outreach initiatives. Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of fire department vehicles, hydrants, hoses, SCBA units (NFPA 1981), and other equipment to ensure operational readiness. Adhere to incident command system (ICS) protocols and maintain situational awareness in hazardous environments. Complete detailed incident reports and documentation per NFPA and department policies. Uphold safety regulations, maintain fitness for duty, and participate in wellness programs in compliance with NFPA 1582 (medical standards) and NFPA 1583 (fitness program). Requirements Minimum Qualifications Must be at least 18 years old (or meet state age requirements). High school diploma or GED (preferred but not always required). Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain an emergency vehicle operator certification (EVOC). Must be physically and medically capable of performing firefighter duties as outlined in NFPA 1582. No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history. Must reside in Wea Township. Certifications & Training (Preferred or Required) Firefighter I and II Certification (NFPA 1001) – required or willing to obtain. Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), EMT, or Paramedic certification (preferred). Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations (NFPA 472/NFPA 1072) – required or willing to obtain. #J-18808-Ljbffr
