Description:
The Child Life Specialist is a crucial member of the total health care team.
This role is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating programs designed to meet the specialized needs of hospitalized children and their families.
The specialist assesses the individual needs of children and families to plan developmentally and therapeutically appropriate activities.
The role includes directing those activities and making necessary adjustments to facilitate coping with the hospital environment.
Documentation of child life assessments, observations, and recommendations for the plan of care and progress notes in the medical record is required.
The specialist orients and supervises volunteers providing ongoing play and developmental activities in the department.
Participation in marketing, public relations, and community-based activities related to children's health is also expected.
The specialist supports research and implements evidence-based practice.
Maintaining educational and clinical expertise is essential by reviewing professional materials and literature.
Attending conferences and workshops, along with networking with other child life programs, helps stay current with trends in child life services.
Independent judgment is required in decision-making involving non-routine problems under general supervision.
This role works directly with patients and customers and interacts with internal customers via telephone or face-to-face.
Collaboration with other healthcare professionals and staff is an important aspect of the job.
