Position Information Job Title Campus Police Officer Posting Number 2888 Job Schedule Full Time Job Shift Varied OCR Code / Classification 7 - Maintenance Services & Police Min Salary 42,958 Max Salary 53,698 Work Location Main Campus Position Summary Information The Campus Police Officer will provide safety and security for students, staff, and faculty and enforce all rules and regulations of the college as directed, including state and federal laws. Note: The Campus Police are governed under Chapter 115D, Community Colleges Section115D-21.1. Campus Law Enforcement Agencies. The board of trustees of any community college may establish a campus law enforcement agency and employ campus police officers. These officers shall meet the requirements of Chapter 17C of the General Statutes, shall take the oath of office prescribed by Article VI, Section 7 of the Constitution, and shall have all the powers of law enforcement officers generally. The territorial jurisdiction of a campus police officer shall include all property owned or leased to the community college employing the officer and that portion of any public road or highway passing through the property and immediately adjoining it, wherever located. Salary range will be determined based on experience & credentials Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED certificate. Valid Driver’s License with a driving record in good standing Successful law enforcement experience. Basic Law Enforcement Training ( BLET ) certification. Must be willing to work the day, evening, or third shift as needed. Certification in CPR and first aid. If selected, successfully pass a thorough police background investigation by completing the following forms: NC Criminal Justice Training & Standards Form F-3 and F-8 Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of general statutes and state & local laws. Successful law enforcement experience on a college/university campus Essential duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Maintain a working knowledge of general law enforcement, including but not limited to the general enforcement of the criminal laws of the State of North Carolina, and specific Campus Police Department procedures. Prevent, detect, and deter crime on all Forsyth Tech campuses. Enforce the criminal and traffic laws of the State of North Carolina. Enforce the local ordinances of the City of Winston-Salem. Respond to calls for service which may necessitate taking some form of action up to and including arrests for violations of the law. Investigate and/or coordinate the investigation of all crimes on Forsyth Tech campuses. Collect and secure evidence concerning crimes on Forsyth Tech campuses. Make recommendations to Forsyth Tech faculty and staff concerning crime prevention. Serve warrants and other criminal papers. Observe and inspect all aspects of campus safety and refer hazards/violations to appropriate department or individual (Supervisor, Director of Campus Police, Maintenance Department, etc.). Provide assistance to any individual in need of medical attention. Enforce all campus parking and traffic regulations. Investigate motor vehicle accidents occurring on campus. Provide assistance for disabled vehicles and retrieve keys from locked vehicles. Periodically patrol buildings and grounds of the College campuses. Take individual offenders into custody for offenses on Forsyth Tech property or pursuant court issued order. Examine doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure. Record data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning machinery or equipment for use of supervisory staff. Language Skills : Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Interpersonal abilities sufficient to interact with individuals and groups from a variety of social, emotional, cultural, and intellectual backgrounds. Example: Ability to establish appropriate relationships with victims and citizens of the community. Mathematical Skills : Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Reasoning Ability : Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Physical Demands Hearing ability sufficient to monitor radio communication/oral communication. Example: Hear and monitor alarms, radio and oral communication, or a cry for help or assistance. Physical abilities to defend self and others and maintain physical control of suspect. Example: Apply handcuffs, leg irons, and waist chains/belts and gain physical control of a suspect within 10 seconds. The ability to manipulate equipment. Examples: Be able to properly and safely use firearms (handgun and shotgun) and drive a vehicle under various conditions (such as maneuvering between objects). Be able to qualify with a firearm (handgun and shotgun). Be able to qualify with a handgun using both the strong and weak hand from the standing, kneeling and prone positions. Be able to properly use a gas mask and riot baton. Be able to run approximately 400 yards; climb steps; drag 150 lbs. dummy; crawl through a darkened 40 ft. culvert; push open an obstructed metal door; and perform sit-ups and push-ups. Vision sufficient for observation and assessment necessary in law enforcement. Example: Observe suspects and others, see to drive, and have adequate vision for surveillance and for protecting self and others. Sense of touch sufficient to perform a physical examination and to detect movement. Example: Detect a pulse. Work Environment : While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee may occasionally be exposed to smoke, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and possible physical harm from victims and perpetrators of crime. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
