Laboratory Phlebotomist

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws and specimen collection using straight or butterfly needles
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to test requirements
• Accurately match laboratory requisition forms with specimen labels and procedures
• Store specimens appropriately to maintain integrity during transport and processing
• Explain the venipuncture or specimen collection process courteously to patients across diverse demographics
• Record and update patient information accurately within the laboratory system
• Package specimens securely for transport, following protocols for temperature control
• Comply with OSHA and Department of Environmental Protection regulations and wear all necessary PPE
• Attend annual departmental training and contribute to maintaining a safe, compliant environment
• Assist with specimen storage, decontamination, and laboratory maintenance tasks
• Answer inquiries and review laboratory results as needed
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor

Required Skills

• Experience performing blood draws and specimen labeling
• Ability to explain specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously
• Proficiency in identifying and matching requisition forms with specimens
• Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and OSHA regulations
• Attention to detail in specimen labeling, processing, and documentation
• Strong communication skills and professionalism in patient interactions
• Basic understanding of laboratory equipment including centrifuges and specimen containers

Additional Skills & Requirements

• Previous phlebotomy certification or training is preferred
• Spanish speaking skills are preferred but not required
• High school diploma or equivalent required; healthcare-related training preferred
• Prior experience in a clinical or hospital setting is a plus
• Availability to work scheduled hours including some weekends (every other Saturday or Sunday)
