The unit consists of 30 beds. The nurse to patient ratio on days is 1:4-5 and on nights is 1:5-6. Common patient diagnoses include total joint replacement, spinal surgery, urology procedures, and various abdominal surgeries. Nurses may encounter patients needing management of hemo hemovacs, JP drains, and colostomies. Experience with first-time travel assignments is acceptable. There is no requirement for RNs to titrate drips. Occasional drips include heparin, PCA pump, and TPN. A charge nurse is present on each shift and may take a low acuity assignment, particularly at night. Patient care technicians are available on the unit with a ratio of 1:12. RT equipment used includes nasal cannula, but RNs are not required to perform treatments. Remote tele packs and monitor techs assist in reading and interpreting telemetry data. RNs do not need to read their own strips. Shifts follow a standard rotation, and self-scheduling may be considered based on unit needs. Weekend requirements are every other weekend, with holiday duties as needed. Floating to medical and telemetry units may be necessary, with assistance available for strip interpretation. The dress code allows for any color of scrubs. A bedside shift report is an expected practice on the unit. Additional time off requests should be submitted upfront, with no additional time allowed after submission. The culture on the unit is described as close-knit and supportive.
