Shift: 6:45 AM - 7:15 PM

Unit Information

Location: Asheville, NC

The unit focuses on Cardiovascular Progressive Care (CVPC) and primarily serves patients undergoing cardiovascular and vascular surgeries. This includes various procedures such as:

• Open heart surgeries (CABG, AVR, MVR, Bentall, TAVR)
• Thoracic lung surgeries (lobectomy, thoracotomy)
• Esophagogastrectomy
• Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) repairs (open and endovascular)
• Femoral-popliteal bypass
• Carotid endarterectomies

Additionally, the unit accommodates overflow medical cardiology patients suffering from conditions like heart failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, chest pain, sepsis, and heart block.

General Information

Number of Beds: 40 cardiac surgery stepdown beds

Number of Staff: Approximately 100 total staff members

• Day Shift: 1 Charge RN, 13 RNs, 4 PCTs, 1.33 Health Unit Coordinators (HUCs)
• Night Shift: 1 Charge RN, 13 RNs, 4 PCTs, 0.33 HUCs

Patient Ratios: 1:5 patients per RN; 1:13 for PCTs

Required Skills and Experience

Most recruited skill set:

• Stepdown experience
• Telemetry experience

Preferred experience includes:

• Previous experience in CV surgery and vascular surgery populations (open heart, TAVR, lobectomy, AAA repair, fem-pop bypass) within the past year
• CVICU experience

Typical Procedures Performed

• Epidural management
• Chest tube management
• Tube feedings
• IV gluccomander
• Cardiac medication management (phenylephrine, dobutamine, dopamine, milrinone, cardizem, amiodarone, insulin, heparin, nitroglycerin, ketamine)

Certifications Required

• ACLS
• BLS

Floating Areas

Requires ability to float to any stepdown unit (1:5 ratios) or medical-surgical unit (1:6-7 ratios), as well as ER inpatient holding area (1:6).

Dress Code

Scrub Color/Attire: All navy, white tops with navy bottoms, or all white.

Weekend and Holiday Requirements

No call is required. Minimum of 6 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday day/night) per 6-week schedule period. Flexibility to work on holidays is expected.
