Position Summary:
The Assistant Nurse Manager Educator (ANM Educator) – Critical Care (ED/ICU/DOU) combines the clinical leadership, operational support, and education functions for the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, and Direct Observation Unit (DOU). The role serves as an extension of nursing leadership across both high-acuity services and is accountable for specialty orientation, competency validation, simulation, ongoing clinical education, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, regulatory readiness, and real-time clinical leadership. The ANM Educator supports consistent practice standards across ED, ICU, and DOU while maintaining department-specific competencies and regulatory requirements.
The role requires flexible presence across shifts to assess practice, provide coaching, validate competencies, support high-risk clinical events, and ensure education reaches day, evening, night, and weekend staff as operationally required.
Duties:
Critical Care Education, Orientation & Competency
- Develop, implement, and evaluate structured orientation pathways for newly hired ED, ICU, and DOU nurses and applicable ancillary clinical staff.
- Assess learning needs using quality data, regulatory findings, competency results, staff feedback, new technology, and changes in evidence-based practice.
- Conduct routine in-services aligned with sepsis, stroke, STEMI, trauma, advanced resuscitation, ventilator management, titratable/vasoactive infusions, hemodynamic monitoring, and other high-acuity care standards.
- Lead or coordinate simulation and mock events including Code Blue, Rapid Response, Stroke Alert, Massive Transfusion Protocol, and other department-specific emergency scenarios.
- Coordinate annual competency validation, critical-care skills fairs, return demonstrations, and individualized remediation plans.
- Develop and support preceptors and provide coaching in clinical judgment, escalation, communication, documentation, and professional practice.
- Participate in hospital-wide new employee orientation and ensure completion of ED-, ICU-, and DOU-specific orientation and competency requirements.
- Maintain accurate education, competency, remediation, and regulatory-readiness documentation.
Emergency Department Clinical & Quality Accountability
- Support triage operations, acuity-based assignments, patient flow, and escalation of high-risk clinical situations.
- Support trauma activations, stroke alerts, STEMI response, sepsis care, Rapid Response, Code Blue, and other emergency response processes.
- Monitor and educate to Sepsis Bundle, Stroke Door-to-Needle, STEMI Door-toBalloon, LWBS, boarding, and other ED performance measures.
- Reinforce EMTALA compliance, documentation integrity, emergency preparedness, and adherence to approved ED policies and protocols.
- Participate in ED case review, incident investigation, root cause analysis, and performance-improvement activities.
Intensive Care Unit Clinical & Quality Accountability
- Support ICU patient assignments based on acuity, complexity, required monitoring, and staff competency.
- Provide clinical leadership and education related to ventilator management, titratable/vasoactive infusions, hemodynamic monitoring, and other advanced criticalcare therapies.
- Support clinical escalation, interdisciplinary rounds, Rapid Response, Code Blue, and escalation to intensivists or other clinical leaders.
- Monitor and educate to sepsis compliance, CLABSI, CAUTI, VAE, pressure injury prevention, mortality, and other ICU quality indicators.
- Participate in mortality review, complex case analysis, incident investigation, and ICU performance-improvement activities.
Direct Observation Unit (DOU) Clinical & Quality Support
- Support high-acuity and progressive-care assignments based on census, acuity, patient condition, and staff competency.
- Support early recognition of deterioration, rapid escalation, and appropriate transfer to a higher level of care.
- Audit intermediate-care documentation, monitoring standards, telemetry practices, and clinical escalation pathways.
- Monitor falls, pressure injuries, infection prevention, sepsis, mortality, length of stay, discharge barriers, step-down utilization, and ICU transfer appropriateness.
- Provide education in telemetry interpretation, progressive-care management, early warning systems, escalation protocols, and emergency response.
- Lead or coordinate Code Blue, Rapid Response, and Stroke Alert simulation activities for DOU staff.
- Coordinate DOU orientation, annual competency validation, skills fairs, return demonstrations, and remediation plans.
- Use chart audits and identified quality gaps to develop targeted education and coaching for DOU staff.
Clinical Leadership & Operational Support
- Serve as a visible clinical leadership resource across ED, ICU, and DOU and provide real-time coaching during high-acuity or complex patient-care situations.
- Support staffing decisions based on census, acuity, skill mix, competency, and patientsafety needs; escalate unsafe staffing or competency concerns.
- Conduct focused audits, identify clinical variances, initiate corrective education within scope, and escalate trends and risks to nursing leadership.
- Collaborate with physicians, Nursing Education, Quality, Infection Prevention, Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacy, Case Management, and other disciplines.
- Support onboarding, retention, performance coaching, cross-training, and professional development of ED, ICU, and DOU staff.
- Provide input regarding staff competency, clinical performance, and development needs to the appropriate Nurse Manager/Director.
Regulatory, Evidence-Based Practice & Readiness
- Maintain readiness for Joint Commission, CMS, CDPH, and other applicable accreditation and regulatory reviews.
- Ensure education reflects approved organizational policies, specialty standards, regulatory requirements, and current evidence-based practice.
- Participate in policy implementation, clinical practice standardization, performance improvement, and evidence-based practice initiatives across critical care.
