Urgent Care CMA Patient-Centered Clinical Support

Job Summary The Certified Medical Assistant – Urgent Care is a multi‑skilled clinical professional who provides indirect and/or direct patient care within the scope of practice. Under the provider’s direction, the Medical Assistant records patient vital signs, documents patient/family needs, participates in care planning, administers ordered medications, and adheres to state and institutional guidelines. Essential Functions Understand and adhere to legal responsibilities and requirements of the Medical Assistant role. Identify significant changes in patient condition through data collection and report them to the provider. Troubleshoot issues and, when necessary, elevate problems to the provider, supervisor, or appropriate internal resource. Demonstrate standards of excellence in care for all internal and external customers. Maintain clinical and administrative skills per departmental competency guidelines to meet patient care and operational needs. Guide patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician. Travel to other facilities, if required, and adjust hours to meet patient care needs as directed by the practice manager. Education High School/GED (required). Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post‑secondary education program is preferred in all states except South Carolina. In South Carolina, acceptable programs include: An accredited Medical Assistant post‑secondary education program A Career and Technical Education health sciences program approved by the South Carolina Department of Education A medical assisting program provided by a branch of the United States military A Medical assisting U.S. Department of Labor approved Registered Apprenticeship program A training program delivered in whole or in part by a health care employer that aligns with a nationally accredited certification exam Licensing & Certifications Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following (required): Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Nationally Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) – National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (not accepted in South Carolina) Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) – National Association for Health Professionals (not accepted in South Carolina) Assessment‑Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR‑OE) – acceptable only if MA certification cannot be obtained (not accepted in South Carolina) BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association is required at hire for Roper St. Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH. Experience Completion of externship or clinical lab training (preferred) 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience (preferred) Skills & Abilities Record patients’ medical history, vital counts, and test results in medical records. Interview patients to obtain information and measure vital signs, weight, and height. Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician. Collect and log blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens for testing. Provide prescription and drug refill information for pharmacies as directed. Explain treatment procedures, medication regimens, diets, and physician instructions to patients. Clean, sterilize instruments, and dispose of contaminated supplies. Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses. Handle general office duties such as answering phones, taking dictation, and completing insurance forms. Complete skills or competency checklists to assist physicians with exam and treatment tasks, including injections, sutures, and wound dressing changes. Strong oral and written communication skills. Collaborative teamwork with patients, families, and high‑volume environments. Medical terminology knowledge. Attention to detail, multi‑tasking ability, and proficiency with standard office equipment (computer, copier, phone, fax). Training None.
