Laser Operator Apprentice

Position Overview Responsible for producing high‑quality cut parts while operating flat or tube laser (including fiber and CO₂ lasers) and plasma cutting machines. Incumbent will be responsible for moving materials within the warehouse during different stages of the order fulfillment process, such as receiving, stocking, pulling to process, surface finishing, grinding, packaging, and loading parts onto transport. Additional responsibilities include preparing and completing work orders, job programming, modifying cut nests for material efficiency, and ensuring that all documentation is completed in accordance with company ISO standards. The incumbent will maintain good housekeeping and perform all duties in a safe and mindful manner. Exceptional, professional, and responsive customer service (internal and external) is required, with prompt and courteous assistance to the production team to process all orders efficiently. Reports To Shift Supervisor Key Responsibilities Operate laser and plasma cutting equipment and maintain safe operation of all related equipment. Produce high‑quality cut parts and perform quality inspections to verify conformance with customer drawings or specifications. Prepare and complete work orders, program jobs, and modify cut nests for material efficiency. Ensure documentation is completed clearly and in accordance with ISO standards. Move materials within the warehouse during all stages of order fulfillment. Maintain housekeeping, cleaning machines, sweeping floors, and disposing of waste properly. Complete safety‑related training and updates, and demonstrate a zero‑tolerance for safety issues. Provide professional customer service to internal and external customers. Performance Objectives Within the first 30 days: proficiently perform machine startup procedures, set up manual plasma and laser cutting heads, and operate, load, and unload finished parts. Inspect, measure, document, and test completed metal work pieces for conformance. Within the first 30 days: document materials in accordance with QSP 8.1 product identification with zero errors. Within the first 30 days: learn standard packaging instructions (QSI 9.1.6) and maintain zero packaging rejections. Within the first 60 days: develop and maintain Excel spreadsheets for laser cut tables and finishing tables, ensuring correct cut tables for Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Carbon Steel, Copper, Brass, or Bronze. Within the first 60 days: define and implement a quality inspection process guaranteeing accurate high‑quality parts with RGA’s not exceeding 1.25 lines per 1,000 lines produced. Within the first 60 days: become competent in receiving inspection of incoming materials per QSP 10.1 with zero delays. Within the first 90 days: correct cutting problems by adjusting laser tables, gas pressures, cut speeds, or machine adjustments; become certified on applicable industrial trucks. Within the first 120 days: develop and maintain maintenance schedules for all equipment and log maintenance tasks. On an ongoing basis: maintain excellent attendance, punctuality, and no tardies or unexcused absences. On an ongoing basis: maintain zero safety incidents and suggest process improvements. On an ongoing basis: adhere to meal and break periods as scheduled. Competencies Helpfully collaborate with teammates and step into alternate roles when required. Apply shop math skills and problem‑solving tools. Operate company vehicles or equipment courteously and safely. Conduct quality inspections with precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, calipers, tape measure, and height gauges. Use granite tables, height blocks, and high‑tolerance inspection equipment. Operate finishing equipment, grinders, and air tools safely. Record machine settings and job notes in multiple software. Perform laser and plasma setup operations, including importing files, loading, and unloading machines. Communicate effectively orally and in writing. Take initiative and handle sheet material or metal plates safely. Requirements / Specifications Proficient in word processing and comfortable learning new software. History of monitoring consumables and maintaining inventory levels. Ability to read blueprints, work orders, and production schedules. Experience operating flat laser, tube laser, plasma cutter, forklift, loading/unloading equipment, and finishing equipment. Strong customer‑service orientation and desire to deliver high‑quality finished products. Physical Demands Must be able to see, hear, speak, and write clearly. Requires manual dexterity for occasional reaching and lifting of small objects, and operating office equipment. Must lift at least 50 pounds without assistance. Work Environment Work occurs in a clean, orderly, well‑lit, and ventilated office with low to medium noise levels.
