High School ELA Teacher

Detroit Community Schools is hiring a full time High School ELA Teacher. Must have Michigan teacher certification and endorsement in the subject.

Job Summary :

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated English Language Arts Teacher to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in teaching literature, writing, and language skills to middle school students. This individual will create a stimulating classroom environment, encourage student engagement and participation, and foster a love for reading and writing.

Responsibilities:

Essential Duties:

• Teach a diverse curriculum that includes literature, composition, grammar, and language usage while considering varied learning styles and needs.

• Develop and implement comprehensive lesson plans that meet the curriculum standards and cater to diverse learning styles.

• Develop assessments and monitor student performance through various methods, including tests, quizzes, projects, and presentations.

• Collaborate with colleagues to align curricula and participate in ongoing professional development initiatives.

• Participate in school activities, meetings, and events to contribute to the overall mission of the institution.

• Maintain a safe and positive environment for all students

• Maintain effective communication with students, parents, and school staff

• Regular and predictable attendance

Cognitive Demands:

• Supervision of multiple students at once

• Establishing routines and procedures

• Maintaining a safe and orderly environment

• Create and implement instructional plans

• Participate in continuous professional development

• Effective oral and written communication skills

Physical Demands:

• Occasionally lift/move objects weighing up to 25lbs

• Stand and walk frequently

• Occasionally sit on the floor or bend down/squat

• Withstand all demands presented by outside weather conditions at any time of the year

• Withstand a moderate noise level

• Be able to perform first aid/CPR if necessary

• Assist/lift students, as necessary

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in English, Education, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
• Valid teaching certification/license for the relevant state.
• Experience in teaching high school students is highly desirable.
• Strong understanding of English language and literature.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to inspire and motivate students.
• Commitment to professional development and staying current with educational best practices
