Assistant Project Manager

The Assistant Project Manager (APM) supports the Project Manager (PM) in planning, coordinating, and executing Transmission and Distribution (T&D) power line construction projects from initiation through closeout. The APM follows up on assigned project tasks and deliverables and helps manage schedules, costs, documentation, and coordination with field operations and support functions. Work assignments may include multiple projects concurrently and provide hands-on exposure to engineering, estimating, project controls, procurement, construction management, safety, quality, and project administration.

What You'll Do

• Assist Project Managers with the planning and execution of transmission and distribution power line construction projects.
• Assist in developing the initial project schedule with engineering, estimating, project controls, procurement, and construction management personnel.
• Coordinate daily project activities with field supervision and construction crews and communicate schedule updates to stakeholders.
• Participate in value engineering and constructability reviews.
• Work with procurement on vendor and subcontractor scopes, purchase orders, subcontract packages, and schedule exhibits for PM review.
• Support project-specific safety planning, incident reporting, and incident investigations with Health and Safety personnel.
• Assist with project schedules, monthly project review reports, forecasting, and other management reporting.
• Track labor, equipment, subcontractor, material, and other project costs and support project budgets and forecasts.
• Document project changes and assist with pricing, change orders, and related correspondence.
• Track RFIs, submittals, contracts, engineering documents, field reports, and other required project records.
• Monitor engineering/design, procurement, and construction progress and identify delays or issues requiring management attention.
• Monitor production metrics and labor productivity and support operational reporting.
• Conduct site visits to observe project progress, work quality, safety compliance, and conformance with project requirements.
• Provide field document control, create daily reports, and take project progress photographs as required.
• Coordinate with clients, engineers, inspectors, subcontractors, vendors, and internal support functions; prepare meeting notes and follow-up items as needed.
• Facilitate project closeout and warranty administration, including final documentation and punch-list items as applicable.
• Perform post-construction cost review and reporting and participate in lessons-learned activities.
• Adhere to company standards, policies, and procedures and perform other duties assigned by the PM, including acting as PM when deemed qualified by the PM or Operations Director.

What You'll Bring

• Bachelor's degree in Business, Construction Science/Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent work experience, or a combination of work and education, may be substituted.
• Experience with engineering, design, construction, estimating, scheduling, bidding, project management, contract administration, field supervision, budget control, safety, or quality assurance is helpful.

Skills & Competencies

• Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in transmission, distribution, and substation work.
• Understanding of the project design process, integrated EPC processes, and construction means and methods.
• Strong analytical, organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team and interact effectively with project stakeholders.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
• Familiarity with estimating, scheduling, project management, and cost-control software and processes.

Preferred

• Experience supporting transmission, distribution, substation, or similar electric utility infrastructure projects.
• Familiarity with project planning, estimating, scheduling, procurement, project controls, and change management.
• Familiarity with union and non-union construction environments.

Travel Requirements

• Position will be approximately 50% office-based at Irby Construction's corporate office in Richland, Mississippi, and 50% travel.
• Regular travel will be required to support projects in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Amarillo, Texas; and other locations throughout the Central Region based on project and business needs.
• Must maintain a valid driver's license and be comfortable with ongoing project-related travel.

Physical Qualifications

• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and field conditions.
• Capable of walking, standing, and climbing for extended periods while visiting active construction sites.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
• Visual and auditory ability to safely navigate active T&D construction sites; reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities.
