Street Superintendent

Overview Under the direction of the Public Works Operations Manager, this position has the overall responsibility for oversight of staff and the day-to-day operations that include the construction, repair and maintenance of city streets, rights of way and landscapes. Success in this position contributes to safe and well-maintained streets and related infrastructure. Essential duties include: Responsibilities Coordinates, supervises and organizes the day-to-day operations of the division. Hires, trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines personnel. Establishes long- and short-term goals and priorities; allocates resources. Generates tasks for crews to complete, including sidewalk repair, street maintenance, tree trimming and removal, and right-of-way maintenance. Enters work orders into the automated work order management system. Reviews and prioritizes work orders from other departments. Responds to public questions and concerns. Prepares weekly and monthly reports. Develops budget recommendations; manages assigned budgets. Directs the purchase of tools, equipment, and supplies. Reviews maintenance and fuel usage for all division vehicles and equipment. Ensures that all department vehicles/equipment are serviced and compliant with motor pool standards of maintenance. Operates a variety of equipment, including edger, weed eater, shovel, hand-held sprayer, chainsaw, leaf blower, demolition saws, pneumatic hammers, mowers, bushhog, and tractors. Operates a variety of standard heavy equipment, including vehicles, aerial and boom slope mowers, articulating bucket lifts, clam and bucket trucks, trencher, dump trucks, articulated loader, rubber tire tractor/loader, trailer, bulldozer, backhoe loader, mini-excavators, off-highway truck, and skid steer loader. Performs maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment in good, clean working condition, including greasing, maintaining fluid levels, changing blades, tires, oil, filters, hoses, and nozzles; ensures necessary repairs are made. Loads and hauls gravel, debris, and other materials onto dump trucks to and from job sites and storage areas. Performs job site safety procedures to ensure and maintain a safe workspace at all times. Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment, fuels as needed; assists in cleaning vehicles and other equipment. Performs flagging duties associated with work zone traffic control. Assists and must be able to perform in all aspects of the department's operations. Performs related duties as assigned. Position Requirements Visual ability to distinguish colors, detect dangerous obstacles, other vehicles or equipment, and pedestrians. Exposure to noise, machinery with moving parts, dust, dirt, grease, and irritating chemicals; Personal Protective Equipment is required and provided. Frequent pushing, pulling, lifting or carrying of loads up to 100 pounds unassisted and occasional digging. Dexterity to operate tools or equipment requiring precision. Approximately 20% of work is indoors at a desk or table, with remaining time outdoors in various weather conditions. Work may involve presence of citizens and traffic, contributing to position complexity. Knowledge of street construction, maintenance, and repair procedures and methods. Knowledge and skill in operation and maintenance of equipment defined in essential duties. Knowledge of and ability to apply current GDOT and MUTCD guidelines. Good judgment, diplomacy, and tact with the ability to solve practical problems and remain helpful and pleasant. Professional appearance and demeanor; treat others with dignity and respect, responding promptly to needs. Detail-oriented with well-developed problem-solving abilities. Ability to prioritize work and adapt to changing conditions. Clear written and verbal communication skills; ability to interpret and relay information. Strong interpersonal skills to interact professionally and build relationships. Proficiency in computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel and email. Ability to multitask multiple projects or issues and meet deadlines. Basic typing and computing skills, including use of communications, inventory, and ticketing systems. High School diploma or GED; some college preferred. Minimum of five years of related experience; minimum of three years of supervisory experience. Possession of a valid State of Georgia driver’s license with acceptable driving history; ability to drive a vehicle as needed. State of Georgia Commercial Class A license preferred or to be obtained within one year of appointment. Possession of MUTCD flagging certification, or ability to obtain within six months of appointment. Note: In extreme events or emergencies, the employee may be required to report back to work after regular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
