Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Emergency Department - PRN

Advanced Practice Provider (Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant) – UAB Emergency Department Work schedule: Irregular/Flexi – rotating 12‑hour shifts (7 a.m.–7 p.m. and 11 a.m.–11 p.m.). New graduate hires will be required to complete 3 months of full‑time orientation. UAB Medicine is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to work for the Division of Emergency Medicine at UAB Hospital. The APP will provide medical care and treatment for patients in the emergency department, including evaluation and management of critically ill patients, performing procedures within the defined scope of practice, and coordinating patient care. The APP will see patients, transcribe notes, obtain health histories, diagnose, manage, and institute emergency measures and treatments. Position Summary To provide medical care and treatment within an established scope of practice to acute care services and emergency medicine patients as assigned by and under the direction of the collaborating physician (Section 610‑X‑5 of the Alabama Board of Nursing Administrative Code) or under supervision of a Board Certified Physician (Section 540‑X‑7 of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners Administrative Code). The collaborating physician shall be available for direct communication for consultation and referral or arrange for the same medical coverage by a physician who is pre‑approved by the State Board of Medical Examiners in the same manner as the collaborating physician of record. Responsibilities include: coordinating plan of care, discharge and specialty referrals as appropriate to meet the age‑specific needs of the patient; planning and coordinating health‑care education for patient, family and other health‑care providers as needed; performing comprehensive physical examinations and assessments; interpreting, analyzing and evaluating patients’ medical records and social data; performing and/or assisting the physician with procedures per collaborative agreement; and coordinating and participating in performance improvement activities. Key Duties & Responsibilities Based on thorough physical and psychosocial patient assessments, formulate and implement comprehensive patient care plans focused on surgical interventions. Plans include patient and family education, prescriptions, additional lab and diagnostic testing, and therapies. Ensure complete documentation of patient assessments, patient care plans, and care provided. Order and interpret laboratory and other diagnostic tests for the patient. Maintain records and reports as required by regulatory agencies and The Joint Commission (TJC). May coordinate and/or participate in performance and quality improvement activities. Assist in the coordination of research protocols, serving as a patient advocate and a liaison between the patient and other health‑care providers. Provide assistance in orientation and/or training of new clinical personnel as needed. Provide educational information by conducting workshops, in‑service training and distributing appropriate materials for patients and staff. Serve as the expert clinical resource to clinical staff and patients in the area of specialty. Provide a safe environment for patients and others.
