Posting Information Posting ID: 16703 – Department: State Health Services – Functional Title: Microbiologist IV – Salary Range: $5,789.18 – $6,657.55 per month – Shift: Day – Location: Austin, TX – Additional Shift: Days (First) – Telework: Not Eligible – Travel: Up to 5% – Full Time: Yes – FLSA: Nonexempt Brief Job Description Under the minimal direction of the Zoonotic Disease Branch Manager, the Microbiologist IV performs complex parasitological work, leads the Medical Parasitology Team, and ensures high‑quality laboratory services. Key duties include conducting specialized examinations to detect, isolate, and identify parasitic organisms, evaluating diagnostic reagents, consulting with medical professionals on procedures, and managing sample loads to meet turnaround times. The role requires implementing new techniques, overseeing quality assurance activities, purchasing materials, and training staff and students. It also involves preparing reports, participating in audits, and serving as a technical resource for the branch. Essential Job Functions (EJFs) Plan and direct daily team activities, update the Branch Manager on progress, and manage testing workflow for parasitic specimens. Conduct quality assurance reviews, maintain documentation, resolve QA issues, and submit quarterly reports. Perform administrative functions such as material management, personnel interviewing, coaching, and customer service to maintain efficient operations. Teach and demonstrate parasitology techniques, evaluate competence, prepare scientific publications, and pursue continuing education. Plan the evaluation and implementation of new techniques, review professional literature, propose cost‑effective solutions, and document changes. Comply with laboratory safety, participate in after‑hours testing, and support disaster response or continuity operations as needed. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge of parasitology, microbiology, molecular biology, and laboratory safety. Proficiency in microscopy, morphology identification, taxonomic keys, and quality assurance procedures. Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, plan and oversee work teams, teach laboratory procedures, and communicate effectively with clients and staff. Competence in laboratory equipment operation, aseptic techniques, record keeping, and data analysis using word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Initial Screening Criteria Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution and at least one year of high‑complexity clinical laboratory testing experience (Required). Experience performing laboratory testing on clinical specimens (Required). Experience and/or knowledge of parasitology, microbiology, and molecular biology (Preferred). Experience in administrative functions such as personnel feedback, task delegation, supply ordering, and interviewing (Preferred). Experience with quality assurance, quality control, and CAP/CLIA regulations and audits (Preferred). Experience training others in laboratory procedures (Preferred). Experience troubleshooting laboratory equipment (Preferred). Experience writing, implementing, and following standard operating procedures (Preferred). Willingness to work non‑standard hours, weekend and holiday shifts, and to travel for continuing education (Required).
