The work you will do:

Equipment Operator / District One / District Maintenance / Fort Myers Operations Center This position will perform maintenance and servicing work to maintain the State Road Right of Way. Annual Salary Range: $38,593.58 - $49,944.63

Your specific responsibilities:

• Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment.
• After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.
• Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
• Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
• Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
• Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.

The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Knowledge of mathematical calculations; standard safety rules and procedures
• Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools; operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles
• Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment; read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms; maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures; communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions; develop and maintain effective working relationships with others

Other job-related requirements:

• Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be "on-call" (24-hour duty) when necessary.
• Possess a valid Class "E" driver's license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
• While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
• Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintains.
• The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
• Employee will be required to be responsive to emergency situations within a short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team.

Minimum qualifications:

• Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
• A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire. A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
