Job Title: Environmental Monitoring Analyst I
Job Description
The Environmental Monitoring Analyst I supports a global sterile injectable manufacturing operation by performing viable and non-viable environmental monitoring throughout the facility. This role focuses on air, water, and surface sampling in classified cleanroom areas, logging all data in a proprietary LIMS, and strictly following cGMP documentation practices. The analyst processes water, product, and commodity samples, performs bioburden testing, and contributes to a high-volume sampling program that is critical to the success of multiple microbiology laboratories. This position offers a stable, full-time opportunity with clear pathways for growth into advanced analyst, certified trainer, and supervisory roles within a large and expanding microbiology organization.
Responsibilities
- Perform viable and non-viable environmental monitoring in manufacturing areas, including air, water, and surface sampling across classified cleanroom areas (A, B, C, and D).
- Collect, handle, and transport environmental samples in accordance with established aseptic techniques and clean room practices.
- Log all samples and test results accurately in a proprietary LIMS and related sample tracking systems while adhering to cGMP documentation standards.
- Conduct bioburden testing on water samples, pharmaceutical product samples, and commodities to detect viable and non-viable particulates.
- Process water, product, and commodity samples in an aseptic laboratory environment, ensuring compliance with cGMP manufacturing requirements.
- Support high-volume sampling operations by collecting thousands of samples per day as part of the Environmental Monitoring team, enabling downstream microbiology labs to complete testing on time.
- Follow clean room gowning procedures and aseptic sampling techniques consistently to maintain sterility and product quality.
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing and laboratory personnel to coordinate sampling schedules and respond to changing production needs.
- Participate in training programs by working with designated team trainers to complete required training qualifications and become certified on routine job tasks.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to environmental monitoring processes, documentation, and sampling efficiency as directed.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and compliant records for all sampling, testing, and environmental monitoring activities.
- Adapt to schedule changes or unplanned events on shift to ensure all required sampling is completed within defined timelines.
- Support a team-based environment by working within a group of analysts under the guidance of supervisors, sharing workload and best practices.
- Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biology, or a related life science field with 0–1+ years of pharmaceutical industry experience in environmental monitoring, or
- Associate’s degree or high school diploma with 1–2 years of environmental monitoring experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Experience gowning and sampling in an aseptic manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of cGMP manufacturing requirements and good documentation practices.
- Familiarity with clean room practices and aseptic lab processing.
- Hands-on experience with aseptic sampling techniques.
- Experience performing or supporting bioburden testing.
- Ability to work with and learn proprietary LIMS systems for sample logging and data management.
- Capability to follow detailed procedures and standard operating procedures in a regulated environment.
- Comfort working in classified cleanroom areas (A, B, C, D) while wearing full gowning.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in sampling, testing, and documentation.
- Ability to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including nights, according to a 2-2-3 schedule.
- Previous experience working directly in a LIMS environment for sample management and data entry.
- Experience with MODA or similar sample tracking systems.
- Prior experience in a pharmaceutical lab setup, particularly within microbiology or environmental monitoring.
- Exposure to high-throughput environmental monitoring operations in sterile injectable or similar manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to evolving processes and participate in process improvement initiatives.
- Interest in developing toward leadership roles, such as certified trainer, senior analyst, or supervisor.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively with a large Environmental Monitoring and microbiology group.
- Ability to remain flexible with scheduling and workflow when operations do not go as planned.
This role is based in a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment that includes both the manufacturing floor and microbiology laboratories. Approximately 80% of the time is spent in manufacturing areas performing environmental sampling, and about 20% is spent in the lab processing samples and performing testing. The Environmental Monitoring team operates on a 2-2-3 rotating night shift schedule (7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.), working 12-hour shifts. The broader EM team consists of approximately 45–50 people split across day and night shifts, organized into teams of 5–8 analysts with multiple supervisors. The site includes all levels of classified cleanroom areas (Grades A, B, C, and D), and analysts perform a wide range of environmental monitoring activities, providing broad exposure to industry-standard EM practices. Gowning is a core requirement for this role; individuals must be comfortable gowning in tight spaces and following strict attire requirements, including no makeup, no fake nails, and no jewelry when sampling. Training begins with new employee orientation and an initial week of onboarding, followed by transition to the assigned team schedule for hands-on training. Analysts work closely with designated team trainers to complete training qualifications and become certified on routine tasks over the course of several months. The team performs thousands of samples per day, and other microbiology labs rely on their timely sampling to complete testing, making this function critical to the overall operation. This is a full-time position, not a contract or temporary role. Employees receive company benefits, including paid holidays and vacation time, and may become eligible for internal conversion opportunities after a defined period, as well as eligibility for pay increases based on tenure and performance. The environment emphasizes stability, growth, and clear career pathways, with structured levels of Environmental Monitoring Analyst roles designed to support advancement into certified trainer and supervisory positions.
