Protected Species Acoustic Monitoring Technician (contract seasonal) The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) launched a PAM project in February 2025 consisting of 17 bottom‑mounted archival stations and two real‑time stations. The project focuses on using acoustic detections to better understand the behavior and habitat use of North Atlantic right whales. Findings from this project will inform fisheries management and vessel speed restrictions in local waters. The position involves deploying and maintaining passive acoustic monitoring equipment and analyzing data to detect large whales. Responsibilities Deploy and retrieve passive acoustic monitoring equipment for regular servicing during June/July and Nov/Dec and for intermittent trips as needed. Aid in data management, equipment maintenance, and preparation. Analyze acoustic monitoring data for detection of large whales according to existing protocols. Visually survey for marine mammals and sea turtles at sea. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications Familiarity with marine mammal and sea turtle species in Massachusetts’ coastal waters. Experience working at sea, including offshore. Proficiency with computer software applications including Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with the R programming language and Raven Pro are preferred. Ability to work as a team and ask questions. Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate field trips; availability outside of state holidays, including weekends, is required. Ability to work in variable weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold environments. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds safely. Special Requirements Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s Class D license or an equivalent license from the state in which you reside. Benefits and Compensation Seasonal contract position with salary ranging from $21.00 to $25.00 per hour. No benefits are included except earned sick leave. Duration of Position: 26 weeks. Start Date: On or after June 1, 2026. End Date: December 31, 2026. Job Details Location: United States – Massachusetts – New Bedford, 836 South Rodney. Schedule: Full‑time, Day shift.
