Duties and Responsibilities Conduct burner firing operation and auxiliary systems for all boilers. Check water softeners for correct operation and maintain salt level for brine tank. Keep the steam plant clean, preventing oil spillage and maintaining a tidy appearance. Maintain accurate records for all logs and reports required. Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair high‑pressure steam systems and all auxiliary equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines, operating design parameters, and industry practices to optimize energy use. Under moderate supervision, troubleshoot and repair steam devices including electronic, electrical, and mechanical components and connections. Maintain a variety of equipment, including hand tools, mobile electronic devices, and measuring/diagnostic/testing meters and instruments. Read and interpret basic blueprints, sketches, schematics, and wiring diagrams. Perform soldering, pipefitting, as required, under moderate supervision. Coordinate repairs with other trades affected by the steam operations. Perform additional duties as assigned within the normal scope of the department’s responsibilities and the individual’s capabilities. Monitor, control, and maintain boiler operations through SCADA system to ensure efficient and safe operation of boilers, tracking system parameters, detecting faults, and implementing corrective actions. Perform and assist with all chemical treatment, including testing, mixing, and loading of chemicals. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent and documentation of formal training in high‑pressure steam systems. At least two years of experience operating a high‑pressure steam plant. Ability to follow both verbal and written directions in English; ability to interact professionally with students, faculty, administration, and staff. Ability to read and understand OSHA guidelines, including Material Safety Data Sheets and fuel/chemical flash points. Physical ability to climb ladders, bend, reach, crawl, and lift up to 60 lbs.; ability to work in enclosed spaces in accordance with OSHA guidelines. Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints, drawings, schematics, and diagrams. Valid driver’s license. Experience in preventative maintenance, meter reading, and lead testing, and in the repair and shut‑off of gas, water, electrical, life safety systems (e.g., fire alarm, sprinkler), and steam supplies. Basic Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Outlook skills. Excellent safety record and no disciplinary actions within the previous twelve months. Ability to erect and work on scaffolding in compliance with OSHA standards. Preferred Qualifications City of Philadelphia Stationary Engineers License.
