Night Attendant (Part Time)

Position Title: Night Attendant, Part Time, Smithtown, NY The Night Attendant is responsible for monitoring students during the overnight hours and providing thoughtful, welcoming support to ensure a positive and comfortable experience during their training. Responsibilities include responding attentively to students’ needs, remaining observant to help prevent emergencies, following established guidelines if emergencies do occur, responding to after‑hour phone calls, and assisting with various administrative tasks. The Night Attendant will also communicate any issues or noteworthy information to Class Instructors at the end of each shift. Anticipated schedule: Three nights per week from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM Essential Functions Create a warm and welcoming environment by actively engaging with students to understand and meet their needs. Take prompt and appropriate action to ensure the health and safety of students, including referring non‑emergency issues to the appropriate resources. Remain alert to emergency conditions such as fire or medical situations and follow all emergency protocols. Perform administrative tasks including data entry, database management, preparing mailings, folding letters, and using Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel. Respond appropriately to fire alarms by following evacuation procedures, assisting others in exiting the building, reporting to designated gathering areas, and conducting a head count to account for all students. Accept late‑night arrivals, orient students to safety protocols, help them settle into their rooms, and familiarize them with key areas of the residence. Respond to after‑hour phone calls. Provide thoughtful, attentive support for minor dog‑related concerns during class. Assist students with the care and management of their dogs in the residence, including helping recover a loose dog, supervising and assisting with dog breaks to ensure dogs relieve themselves, cleaning up any accidents (urination, defecation, or vomiting) in the residence or break areas, and handling dog breaks for students who are ill. Assist students, with or without dogs, to ensure they are aware of each other’s presence as needed for safety and orientation. Provide students with extra blankets, towels, or other items as needed. Communicate any incidents or noteworthy occurrences from the shift to the Class Instructors at the end of each shift. Follow all organizational safety rules and procedures, ensuring that tasks are completed in the safest possible manner, while encouraging co‑workers to do the same. Perform other duties as assigned. Essential Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience in hospitality or customer service preferred. Ability to work overnight hours; flexibility with workdays, including weekends and some holidays, may be required. First Aid and CPR certification required. Outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills; effective communicator with the ability to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds in a positive and professional manner. Ability to exercise sound judgment, take initiative, and recommend solutions when resolving problems. Comfortable working around large dogs. Ability to assess emergency situations and respond appropriately. Possess the skills necessary to perform administrative tasks including data entry, database management, preparing mailings, and folding letters. Willingness and ability to learn and apply proper etiquette when interacting with individuals who are visually impaired. Physical Demands Ability to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, bend to the floor, drive and/or travel as needed. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally exert up to 20 pounds of force. Visual Acuity Near acuity and accommodation are required for ability to see and read text and copy of written materials for publishing and to read computer screen. Hearing Ability Ability to interact with staff and public in an informal or formal way. Work Environment Employee is exposed to office, kennel and residence environment. This includes animal hair and dander as well as cleaning and antibacterial cleaning solutions. Compensation Information The rate of pay for this position is $18.50 per hour.
