Financial Services Advocate

Role Overview Serves as the primary resource for assisting BTNRH patients and families with financial assistance opportunities before, during, and after their care delivery. Supports patients in understanding financial obligations and exploring suitable options, including care estimation, financial assistance, payment plans, and enrollment in government health programs. Key Responsibilities Conduct financial screenings to estimate out‑of‑pocket liability, including co‑payments, coinsurance, deductibles, and non‑covered charges. Communicate and collect estimated liabilities, counsel on payment options, and enroll patients in financial assistance programs such as BTNRH Financial Assistance. Screen patients for secondary Medicaid eligibility; complete and submit state Medicaid applications (NE, IA, and other programs such as MHCP and waiver programs). Handle all bankruptcy notices, maintain compliance with bankruptcy laws, and coordinate adjustments with billing systems. Collaborate with the external collection agency and internal Revenue Cycle team to manage presumptive charity and settlements. Perform pre‑collection calls to establish payment plans or identify financial assistance, reducing referrals to third‑party collections. Review and process delayed or denied Medicaid and commercial claims, update Epic with correct filing order, and work with clinical teams to resolve coverage issues. Track pending Medicaid applications daily and update coverage status upon approval, including notifying pre‑certification and utilization review nursing teams. Maintain quarterly reports summarizing financial assistance activities, community resource referrals, and collection efforts. Provide updates to leadership, compliance, and marketing teams to ensure accurate communication of policies and procedures. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Proficient with ICD‑9‑CM, HCPCS/CPT coding theory, medical terminology, and disease processes. Typing speed of at least 30 words per minute with 90% arithmetic accuracy. Strong written and oral communication, de‑escalation skills, and confidentiality handling. Interpretation of insurance contracts and benefits, familiarity with Medicare, Medicaid, PPO, HSA plans, and commercial billing. Working knowledge of 1500 and UB04 billing formats. Excellent interpersonal, critical thinking, and organizational skills. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 5 years of healthcare experience in collections, follow‑up, or customer service. Knowledge of medical insurance, EMTALA regulations, hospital billing, and collection processes. Preferred Qualifications Associate’s degree in Business, Healthcare, Finance, or Customer Service. Experience with Electronic Medical Records.
