College and Career Advisor for the Young Adult Borough Center

The Child Center of NY strengthens children and families with skills, opportunities, and emotional support to build healthy, successful lives. Founded in 1953, The Child Center of NY has become a powerful community presence throughout the city. With 50 locations and 100 programs in NYC's most under-served communities, our 1,000+ results-oriented professionals make a difference for more than 40,000 children and their families each year. The College and Career Advisor for the Young Adult Borough Center works directly with students to develop individualized plans for academic success, career readiness, and post-secondary achievement. This role provides comprehensive guidance and support to help participants identify and pursue their college and career goals, while connecting them to the resources and skills needed to thrive personally and professionally. The standard schedule for the Young Adult Borough Center is Monday-Wednesday, 12:15 p.m.-8:15 p.m.; Thursday, 11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.; and Friday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., with some flexibility based on program needs. This role is perfect for you if you have worked professionally or while a college student in a role like: Academic Peer Advisor: Advising students on career pathways after HS/College (post-secondary planning for trade school, college, certifications, etc.) Collegiate Mentor: Guiding underclassman on strategies for success (study habits, selecting a major, self-empowerment) Guidance Counselor: Advocating for student success for their present and future needs Career Center Peer Advisor: Assists with resumes, career exploration, internships, and job readiness. Academic Support and Advising Monitor student academic progress and attendance; communicate with relevant school personnel and schedule timely interventions to support high school graduation. Collaborate with NYCPS School Guidance Counselors to align support strategies and promote student academic success. Assess student skills, interests, and goals through individual interviews and group activities; develop personalized academic and college/career plans. Advocate for students' rights and well-being, while equipping them with self-advocacy skills. College and Career Preparation Educate and advise students and families on post-secondary options including college, technical programs, and employment pathways. Maintain and share up-to-date resources on colleges, scholarships, financial aid, and college preparation guides. Participate in and help facilitate college visits, career exploration activities, school trips, and program events. Build and maintain relationships with schools, employers, and professional organizations to expand student opportunities. Student and Family Support Provide timely intervention and support for issues that may prevent a student from functioning effectively in school; refer to mental health services as needed. Engage and sustain relationships with family members to address barriers impacting student performance and success. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field. Minimum 2+ years of direct experience working with high school or college students providing academic advisement, counseling and outreach, or youth development. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Effective conflict resolution skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Satisfactory background check, fingerprint clearance, and health screening. Preferred Qualifications Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Bengali, or other languages relevant to community needs. The Child Center of NY is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
