Title: Mechanical Designer

Location: Remote, New England

Salary: Up to $125,000, depending on experience, plus a discretionary annual bonus + up to $10,000 sign on, if required

 

The Opportunity

Our client is a multi-discipline engineering firm where design coordination happens directly between colleagues rather than across a chain of outside consultants. They are hiring a Mechanical Designer to take HVAC and plumbing design on whole buildings, from concept through to construction administration. This is not a seat where you pick up one package of a scheme that someone else is running. The seat is worked remotely from anywhere in New England. Several of their designers already work this way, so it is an established arrangement rather than an exception being made for one hire.

 

The Work

• HVAC load calculations, equipment selection and system layout
• Plumbing design covering domestic, sanitary, storm and specialty systems
• Modelling and documentation in Revit and AutoCAD MEP
• Energy and load modelling using industry standard tools
• Specifications, schedules and drawing sets through each design stage
• Direct coordination with the other engineering teams inside the same firm
• Construction administration, submittal review and site queries through to closeout

 

Project Mix

A large share of the portfolio is federal and Department of Defense work. Alongside that sit commercial, healthcare, education and municipal projects across New England. The variety means the systems work changes materially from one project to the next rather than repeating a single building type.

 

The experience that fits best

You would be doing HVAC and plumbing design on the same buildings, so 5+ years of design work inside a consulting A/E or MEP firm is the right base.

You do not need to be equally strong in both disciplines. The client has confirmed that solid design experience in either HVAC or plumbing translates to the other, and that the second discipline is picked up in post. Strong single-discipline designers are genuinely in scope.

Working knowledge of AutoCAD, AutoCAD MEP and Revit is what the day to day runs on. 

 

What makes this different

The firm is small enough that a designer owns whole systems end to end and sits one step away from the mechanical technical director. Decisions get made in the room rather than escalated. For someone currently taking a single package on large projects inside a bigger house, the trade is scope and ownership rather than scale.

 

Site access

Part of the portfolio sits on federal sites, so one question needs establishing early in the process:

Are you able to obtain unescorted access to US Navy installations?

 

Also useful, though not needed to apply

• Federal, DoD or NAVFAC project experience
• Healthcare, laboratory or higher education project experience
• Design experience across both HVAC and plumbing rather than one
• Experience at a contractor or design-build firm moving into consulting
