Summary The Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist at this level is fully functional as an Advanced DRT in Mammography and is able to carry out the assigned tasks independently. This specialty involves the specific knowledge and abilities to perform complex imaging of the breast. Mammographers must be able to employ specialized mammographic image techniques such as magnification views and implant views of the breast. Responsibilities Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties include, but not limited to: Screening and diagnostic mammography exams. Responsible for the quality and quantity of imaging examinations, and for ensuring the proficiency and compliance of staff to all service, facility, and accreditation standards for breast imaging. Obtain images of sufficiently high quality, most useful to the interpreting radiologist, the technologist must evaluate the patient's body habitus based on the patient's age, size, condition of skin (placing markers if indicated), contravening disabilities, and previous breast augmentation or surgeries to determine proper exposure technique settings. Actively participates in the collection of test data related to image quality, dose, and half value layer evaluations through the use of breast phantoms requiring clinical images evaluated for positioning, compression, exposure levels, resolution, contrast, noise, exam identification, and artifacts. Reviews data and images with Mammography Director, interpreting physician(s), and/or medical physicist(s). Positions patients accurately, applying knowledge of anatomy and ultrasound imaging equipment, to provide optimal visualization. proper records and processes images from the ultrasound unit. Incorporates equipment components and parameters to obtain all required visualization, including transducers, using color and pulsed-wave Doppler, and Gray Scale techniques to evaluate these structures for size, abnormal contour, cysts, tumors and various pathological disorders. Prepares sterile field using proper sterile technique and makes available all necessary instruments and supplies for the specific procedure. Prepares devices and equipment used to obtain a biopsy specimen. Prepares the breast site for injection of contrast materials, harvesting of tissues utilizing sterile technique. Assists physicians in the performance of invasive procedures, operating devices, and obtaining and handling specimens as needed. Complies with all policies regarding infection control practices pertaining to pre-cleaning and cleaning processing of RMEs. Cleans and disinfects all RMEs according to manufacturing guidelines and VHA operating standards associated with RMEs. Maintains a clean work area. Stock room with supplies needed to perform examinations and provide emergency treatments. Prepares the room and equipment necessary prior to each patient examination. Ensures that scheduling of procedures is in accordance with VA regulations. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-9 Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Certification: DRT assignments that include performance of independent duties in this subspecialty require advanced ARRT (M) certification. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: *Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. *Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. Preferred Experience: Previous Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Mammography) experience.
