Maintenance Mechanic
Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY
Job Summary Ready to put your maintenance skills to work in a role that directly supports our mission of providing food to Oklahomans facing hunger? As a Maintenance Mechanic, you will help keep our facilities, equipment and operational spaces running safely, efficiently and reliably. You will perform preventative maintenance, troubleshoot equipment issues, support regulatory and safety requirements and help ensure daily operations can continue with minimal disruption. What success looks like in the first 6-12 months: you consistently complete preventative maintenance on schedule, respond effectively to maintenance needs, maintain accurate service records, identify and address equipment concerns before they become larger issues and contribute to a safe, well-maintained environment that supports organizational goals.
A Day in the Life The essential functions described below represent the primary responsibilities of this role and may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
Maintain Facility Systems and Equipment
• Inspect equipment across the organization to find concerns early.
• Complete preventative maintenance (PM) work orders so scheduled maintenance is finished and recorded on time.
• Maintain refrigeration, freezer and cooler equipment so temperature-controlled storage protects food quality.
• Repair appliances, forklifts, dock equipment, kitchen equipment and facility systems within assigned authority.
• Service HVAC/R systems, air conditioning units and ventilation systems to maintain safe working conditions.
• Maintain material handling and warehouse equipment so daily operations can continue safely.
• Replace approved components so equipment continues working as intended.
Diagnose Mechanical, Electrical and Control Issues
• Use schematics, technical manuals and equipment readings to identify mechanical and electrical issues accurately.
• Troubleshoot motors, sensors, controls and related components across assigned facility equipment.
• Diagnose warehouse, refrigeration, HVAC, kitchen and packaging equipment concerns to determine likely causes.
• Decide when assigned repairs can be completed safely with available tools and parts.
• Identify parts needs so repairs, preventative maintenance and downtime concerns can be planned.
• Recommend vendors, parts or added review when work exceeds assigned repair authority.
• Escalate urgent safety, access, temperature or equipment concerns so next steps can be determined.
Safety and Compliance
• Respond to in-house maintenance requests across the organization as soon as practical.
• Use lockout/tagout procedures when required to control hazardous energy before maintenance work begins.
• Maintain inspection logs and service records so repairs, parts and follow-up needs are documented.
• Explain repair status clearly so employees understand timing, access needs and next steps.
• Coordinate approved vendor visits when outside service is needed for assigned equipment.
• Follow safety procedures during each maintenance activity to reduce preventable risk.
• Keep tools, parts and work areas organized so maintenance work can be completed efficiently.
Other Duties as Assigned Other duties, consistent with the scope and essential functions of the role, may be assigned as organizational needs evolve. Required Qualifications
How you have spent your time:
• Accreditation from a technical school or applicable skilled trades program is required.
• At least two years of relevant maintenance, facility or skilled trades experience is required.
• Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electromechanical equipment is required.
• Experience diagnosing moderately complex equipment issues and escalating complex concerns is required.
• Experience reading schematics, technical manuals and equipment documentation is required.
• Experience in completing preventative maintenance, repairs and service documentation is required.
Other Requirements:
• Valid driver's license with a driving record that meets organizational standards.
• Ability to complete a background check, motor vehicle record review, drug screening and physical assessment as required for the role.
• Ability to get forklift, AIB and Serve Safe Certifications.
• Ability to learn and use maintenance, work order and communication systems needed for the role.
• Ability to follow safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and required personal protective equipment.
Safety Sensitive Designation This position is classified as Safety Sensitive under Oklahoma law. Employees in safety sensitive roles perform duties where even a momentary lapse in concentration could result in injury to themselves, others or cause environmental harm. The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is not permitted to hire applicants who hold a medical marijuana card for safety sensitive positions, in compliance with state law.
Preferred Qualifications
How you have spent your time:
• Experience with commercial refrigeration, freezer or cooler systems.
• Experience maintaining forklifts, dock equipment or material handling equipment.
• Familiarity with food production, warehouse or temperature-controlled storage environments.
• Experience using computerized maintenance management or work order systems.
Physical & Environmental Expectations This role requires substantial physical effort and continuous coordination in warehouse or operational environments, including operating forklifts, pallet jacks and other heavy equipment, moving objects exceeding 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently and 20 pounds constantly with mechanical aids when appropriate, accessing elevated or confined spaces and maintaining attention to safety signals, alarms and spoken instructions. Work may involve outdoor conditions, temperature changes, dust, chemicals, gases, fumes, smoke, noise, vibrations and industrial environments with various hazards. The role typically does not involve regular travel, though occasional isolated trips may occur, and may require scheduled participation in a rotating on-call program or limited response to unscheduled operational needs when business necessity requires.
