Housing Assistant

VETERANS HEALTH ADMINISTRATION

Summary

The Housing Assistant is assigned to the Housing and Urban Development-VA Supportive Housing Program (HUD/VASH) within the Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCV) at the VA Medical Center. The position has primary responsibility for coordination of housing resources and outreach to increase and maintain appropriate housing options for homeless Veterans in the program.

Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Identifying local landlords and realtors to find potential housing units for Veterans.
  • Knowledge of community resources and entitlement programs.
  • Maintaining a database of landlord and property management companies that accept Housing Choice Voucher subsides.
  • Documenting interventions in a timely manner.
  • Working effectively within a multi-disciplinary team providing valuable contributions to Veterans treatment plan development and recovery goals.
  • Acting as a liaison between all parties including the VA, Public Housing Authority, landlord and Veterans to address housing needs.
  • Assisting Veterans with housing search process, including helping Veterans to fill out applications.
  • Assisting Veterans with identifying potential or existing problems in apartments and assisting Veterans with requesting repairs.
  • Providing expert advice on procurement issues.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

  • Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary with long periods of sitting at a desk, working with computers daily. Some work may require walking in offices and similar areas for meetings. Work may also require walking and standing in conjunction with travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the worksite. The work does not require any special physical effort.

  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP) - See "Required Documents" below for details.

Qualifications

IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-5 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
You must possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-4) in Federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes developing housing resources for homeless clients; providing homeless outreach services; developing relationships with other support organizations such as property management groups and landlords. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE.)

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:
You must have successfully completed 4 years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. One full year of graduate education is considered to be 18 semester hours. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
You must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-5 level. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE AND COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)

DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT:

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
