Job Summary Responsible for supervising, performing and executing underwater Aquarius habitat maintenance, offshore rigging operations and support saturation diving operations utilizing SCUBA and Surface Supplied Diving systems to a depth of 100 Feet of seawater. Support land based and offshore recompression chamber operation. These duties directly support the FIU Aquarius Reef Base habitat Program. Provides offshore logistical and emergency response support to the Aquarius Habitat, as well as maintains and operates all underwater laboratory equipment, small boats. Monitors and maintains Life Support Systems on board the Aquarius Habitat. Serves as Diving Supervisor and coordinates diving activities. Assists scientists and clients in accomplishment of underwater tasks and objectives. Services, maintains, and operates all underwater laboratory equipment and support systems (for example, high and low pressure gas systems, life support components, environmental control units). May supervise individuals performing similar functions and service more complex systems. Monitors critical safety information, ensures diving and support equipment is functional, operates small boats in support of operations and performs routing and emergency maintenance. Monitors inventory and ensures all equipment is ready to support missions Serves as the Lead Habitat Tech inside the habitat during saturation missions, including but not limited to monitoring and maintaining on board systems, coordinating diving activities and assisting aquanauts. Responsible for ensuring accomplishment of underwater tasks are completed, including but not limited to assisting aquanots, placement and retrieval of experiments, measuring and documenting, video and still photography, sampling and collecting, monitoring and observing. Provides shore based logistical support of Aquarius operations. Serves as the Qualified Diving Supervisor and Re-Compression Chamber Supervisor Serves as a Standby safety diver for SCUBA and Surface supplied diving operations. Plans, organizes, and oversees special projects as assigned by supervisor Supervises re-compression chambers operations Organizes, plans, coordinates, and supervises personnel, including ARB sponsored divers, scientists, equipment, and procedures used during saturation diving missions. Coordinates and prioritizes work assignments for part time staff and interns. Assist the FIU's Diving Safety Officer in the instruction of specialized diving classes for aquanauts and clients Performs essential duties in emergencies such as hurricanes, storms, and/or any other university emergency closing. Is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification from a department administrator Utilizes underwater lift bags to move object up to 10000 lbs. Serves as a tender for Surface Supplied diving operation. Serves as a crew member under USCG regulations which requires random drug screening. Supervises diving operations. Operates High- and Low-pressure divers air compressors. Performs basic electrical and plumbing task topside and underwater. Performs basic rigging calculation and conduct underwater and topside lifts. Conducts general maintenance on SCUBA and diving life support systems. Minimum Qualifications Commercial Diving school or Military Dive school or related field OJT and 5 years of commercial/Military experience. Departmental Requirements SCUBA diving certification. Within 6 months of employment, the employee must complete the diving supervisory, and within 18 months the employee must complete the Personal Qualification Standards (PQS) for this position as described in the departmental procedure. Demonstrate the ability to pass a Diving Physical Exam in accordance with University Policy. Desired Qualifications ADCI or DCBC card holder or documented On-the-Job (OJT) training with a commercial diving company. General knowledge and possess technical skills to effectively and safely carry out determined diving methodologies. Working knowledge of diver's life support systems. Working knowledge of safe diving procedures, practices, and standards. General working knowledge of boating operations. 5 years of experience as a military diver, commercial diver or with a University research diving program at a supervisory level. Current Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, Automatic External Defibrillator, First Aid and Oxygen Administration certifications. Ability to perform working dives, scientific dives and perform as a boat crew member. Ability to work in an enclosed Space.
