Holtz Children's Hospital at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center is one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the southeast United States, where UHealth - University of Miami Health System physicians treat children from throughout Florida and the Caribbean. Holtz Children's is known worldwide for its care of critically ill newborns in its neonatal intensive care unit, which is one of the largest in the United States and boasts some of the best medical outcomes. In collaboration with the Miami Transplant Institute, Holtz Children's is one of only three centers in the country that specializes in pediatric multi-organ transplants. It is home to one of only three state-accredited comprehensive children's kidney failure centers and one of the largest pediatric kidney transplant programs in the world. The Children's Heart Center at Holtz Children's is the only comprehensive children's heart program in South Florida. In partnership with the University of Miami, Holtz Children's also trains the most pediatric physicians of any medical center in the southeastern United States.

Summary

• Paramedic is a member of the health care team who performs functions which support the delivery of a single standard of care, and delivery of emergency first aid for a group of patients relating to their hygiene, safety, nutrition, elimination and comfort needs.
• The function is performed under the supervision of a physician, medical provider or registered nurse. Paramedic applies artificial respiration or administers oxygen in cases of suffocation and asphyxiation.
• Administers antiseptic solution to prevent infection until patient can receive professional care. Starts and administers intravenous fluids. Assists in lifting patient onto wheeled cart or stretcher and into and out of ambulance.
• May aid physicians during emergency situations.

Responsibilities

• Assists physicians and nurses with performing medical procedures, including examinations, minor surgical interventions, orthopedic treatment, and resuscitation.
• Performs technical procedures as delegated, including but not limited to establishing IV access, performing ECGs and vital signs/telemetry monitoring, collecting specimens, providing wound care, transporting patients, patient positioning, mobility, drainage, personal hygiene: bath, dressing, bed making/linen changes etc.).
• Documents and communicates assessment findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to medical/nursing staff. Uses a systematic process to provide/modify care and patient/family education and support.
• Prepares supplies and equipment and utilizes specialized equipment as needed when providing patient care.
• Assists with keeping department areas clean, stocked, and orderly.
• Prepares and cleans exam rooms, patient treatment areas and stretchers between patient uses, as needed.
• Takes and picks up food orders for patient's kitchen evaluation.
• Assists in the fabrication of adaptive and assistive equipment, i.e. washing mitts, wheelchair gloves, safety belts, straps, etc. Assists with office duties as needed, i.e. answering phone, taking messages or any other related clerical duties.
• Follows and performs all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency check-list.
• Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Experience

Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.

Education

High school diploma is required. Graduate of an Accredited Program in Emergency Medical Technician.

Skill

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking, decisive judgment and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications. Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the nursing area.

Credentials

Valid Florida Paramedic or EMT license is required. American Heart Association and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers may be required at the unit level upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.

Unit Specific Credential

AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) with 6 months validity

Working Conditions

Physical Requirements - Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices. Jobs in this group require frequent visual acuity to perform activities related to extended use of computers. Exposure to various environments such as: communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a hospital and medical office environment. Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when exposed to infectious/clinical hospital environment.
