Public Health Nurse II

Overview The Vermont Department of Health's Newport Local Health Office is seeking a collaborative and community-focused Public Health Nurse to serve as the Family & Child Health Coordinator and School Liaison Nurse. This dual role supports healthier outcomes for children, adolescents, and families through prevention‑focused public health work centered on collaboration, health equity, and community engagement. The Coordinator works with community partners, schools, healthcare providers, and organizations to improve care coordination, reduce health disparities, and strengthen systems that support maternal and child health. The Liaison Nurse supports healthy school environments by collaborating with school personnel, healthcare providers, and community organizations to address students' physical, emotional, social, and mental health needs. Public health nurses in this role promote systems‑level improvements that encourage lifelong healthy behaviors and improve educational and health outcomes for Vermont youth. All staff also participate in emergency preparedness and response activities, requiring flexibility, teamwork, and the ability to respond to emerging public health needs. Telework State of Vermont telework policy requires at least three days a week working in the office. The Department of Health supports a hybrid work environment that combines in‑person and remote work. Upon hire, employees work with their supervisor to create a schedule that aligns with the business needs of the unit and complies with State policy. The hybrid model promotes autonomy and allows for increased flexibility and work/life balance. Environmental Factors Duties are primarily performed in a standard office setting; work may also be performed in clinic settings and client homes. Exposure to communicable diseases and stressful situations may occur. Private transportation is required. Work may include evenings, weekends, and 12‑hour shifts. Minimum Qualifications Associate’s degree in nursing AND five (5) years or more of professional nursing experience INCLUDING three (3) or more years in public health or community health nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) AND three (3) or more years in public health or community health nursing. Possession of, or eligibility for, licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Vermont or eligible to practice in the state of Vermont via a multi‑state license. Must maintain Vermont licensure or a multi‑state license as a condition of employment. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
