Plumber

The purpose of this position is to perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems and equipment. The position also provides guidance, instruction, and leadership to subordinate plumbers in the absence of the Plumbing Supervisor, and performs related duties as assigned. Work is performed within a general framework of established procedures, with the employee responsible for determining appropriate work methods and task sequences under general supervision. This position reports directly to the Plumbing Supervisor. ESSENTIAL TASKS Installs, maintains and repairs various plumbing systems and equipment, including but not limited to plumbing fixtures, water heaters / coolers, water lines, sewer lines, valves, water fountains, etc. Tests all County backflow prevention devices to ensure compliance with applicable regulations. Performs some mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair work as necessary. Performs preventive maintenance tasks as scheduled. Troubleshoots and diagnoses routine equipment and system problems; schedules and performs routine repair work or parts replacement. Provides training, leadership, advice and assistance to co-workers as needed; ensures that all work orders are completed correctly and in a timely manner. Assists supervisor in planning and coordinating major installation and maintenance projects as requested. Maintains assigned tools and equipment. Maintains accurate records on maintenance/repair work completed by utilizing the department’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). Performs all work in accordance with all applicable policies, procedures, regulations and standards of safety and quality; ensures the timely completion of all assignments. Attends training, workshops, meetings, etc., as necessary to enhance job knowledge and skills. VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION: Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by formal training, special courses or self-education that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in mechanical maintenance or a closely related field. SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES Must possess a valid state driver’s license. Must possess and maintain or be able to obtain within one year of the hire date, a Backflow Prevention Certification. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Requires over two years and up to and including four years. PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, reaching, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
