Job DescriptionJob DescriptionJob Title:Lead Traffic Control Flagger (Crew Lead)Position Summary:The Lead Traffic Control Flagger is responsible for overseeing and executing traffic control operations at assigned job sites. This role leads a team of flaggers, ensures compliance with safety standards, and serves as the primary point of contact for field coordination, client interaction, and job site execution.The Lead Flagger maintains safe and efficient traffic flow while ensuring all team members perform duties in accordance with company policies and traffic control regulations.Key Responsibilities:Leadership & SupervisionLead, direct, and supervise traffic control flaggers on assigned job sitesAssign positions and responsibilities to crew members prior to shift startEnsure team members are properly trained, equipped, and following safety protocolsMonitor employee performance and provide coaching or corrective guidance as neededReport attendance issues, no-shows, or performance concerns to managementTraffic Control OperationsOversee and actively participate in directing traffic using stop/slow paddles, flags, and hand signalsEnsure safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians through work zonesCoordinate with opposing flaggers and crew members to maintain smooth traffic flowAdjust traffic patterns as needed based on site conditions, congestion, or emergenciesEnsure compliance with MUTCD, OSHA, and company safety standardsWork Zone Setup & ComplianceLead setup and breakdown of traffic control zones including cones, signage, barricades, and lane closuresEnsure all traffic control devices are properly placed, visible, and compliant with regulationsConduct site assessments to identify hazards and implement corrective actionsMaintain a clean, organized, and safe job site at all timesCommunication & CoordinationServe as the primary on-site contact for supervisors, clients, and crew membersCommunicate traffic plans, changes, and safety concerns to team membersCoordinate with construction crews and project managers to align traffic flow with job site operationsProvide clear direction and maintain professional communication with the publicSafety & Incident ManagementEnforce all safety procedures and ensure compliance across the teamMonitor for unsafe conditions, erratic drivers, or hazards and respond immediatelyHandle on-site incidents, accidents, or emergencies and escalate as requiredEnsure crew maintains high visibility, proper PPE, and alertness at all timesAdministrative & ReportingComplete daily reports including attendance, site notes, and incident documentationTrack equipment usage and report damages or shortagesAssist in maintaining accurate job logs and compliance documentationQualifications:Previous experience as a Traffic Control Flagger (required)Lead or supervisory experience preferredValid flagger certification (ATSSA or state-specific)Strong knowledge of traffic control standards and safety regulationsAbility to lead teams in fast-paced, high-risk environmentsSkills & Competencies:Leadership and team managementStrong communication and decision-making skillsSituational awareness and quick response abilityReliability and accountabilityAbility to work independently and take initiativePhysical Requirements:Ability to stand for extended periods (8–12 hours)Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditionsAbility to lift and move traffic control equipment (cones, signs, barricades)Must maintain alertness in high-traffic environmentsWork Environment:Outdoor construction and roadway environmentsExposure to traffic, noise, weather, and heavy equipmentMay require early mornings, nights, weekends, and overtime
