Campus Police Officer

Job Summary Campus Police Officer position to perform general duty police work, protect life and property, enforce laws, maintain order, and prevent and investigate crime on the Cheney campus. Responsibilities Patrol assigned area on foot or in a patrol car; enforce institution rules, local, state, federal statutes and ordinances; inspect buildings and grounds, conduct fire watches, and investigate irregularities. Direct and regulate traffic; investigate accidents or crimes; administer first aid; issue citations; gather evidence; locate witnesses; appear in court, present evidence, and testify. Issue misdemeanor citations; investigate, arrest, and/or book suspects into applicable detention facilities for misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors, and felony offenses. Assist city or county police and state patrol in emergency cases. Operate department communication equipment; answer telephone inquiries; receive reports of criminal activity; dispatch foot and mobile units; operate paging system; monitor alarm systems; prepare, type, and distribute reports. Prevent or disperse illegal gatherings or demonstrations; maintain surveillance of areas suspected of criminal activity; perform other duties as required. Required Qualifications High school graduation or GED. Minimum age of 21 years. Valid driver’s license. No previous felony convictions. At least two years of full‑time college in Police Science or allied field, or at least one year of police or campus security experience. Must pass written and physical test administered through Public Safety Testing. Must pass psychological and polygraph tests. Must complete a 720‑hour basic law‑enforcement academy and certify as a peace officer (for entry level) or possess a Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Basic Law Enforcement Academy Certificate (for lateral). Must pass a criminal background check and meet all health requirements including MMR immunization (waivers available for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs). Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship. Preferred Qualifications Current commissioned police officer. Skills & Abilities Behave morally and make ethical decisions. Conditions of Employment Work rotating shifts (e.g., 7K – 6‑month rotation of 10 hour 40‑minute shifts per day with 5 ON / 4 OFF or 5 ON / 5 OFF pattern). Physical demands include use of eye, hearing, and respiratory protection; protective gloves, duty boots, and ballistic vest. Background check required prior to employment.
