Police Department Intern (unpaid)

This is a non-paid, educational internship designed for college students seeking firsthand exposure to the operations and functions of the Police Department. The internship provides students with practical experience to support academic requirements while gaining a comprehensive understanding of administrative, support, and organizational functions of a municipal police department. Interns are non-sworn, non-certified, and do not possess arrest authority or law enforcement powers.

Major duties include:

• Assisting designated units with clerical, administrative, and organizational support.
• Observing departmental operations across multiple divisions including Administration, Records, Training, and Community Outreach.
• Assisting with filing, data entry, document preparation, and general office support under supervision.
• Assisting with preparation of non-confidential correspondence, reports, and materials.
• Assisting with logistical support for meetings, training sessions, and community events.
• Maintaining confidentiality of all information encountered during the internship.
• Complying with all City and Police Department policies and procedures.
• Performing other related duties as assigned consistent with an educational internship.

Limitations of authority include:

• This position is non-sworn and non-certified.
• Interns shall not make arrests, conduct investigations, carry weapons, or exercise law enforcement authority.
• Interns shall not work patrol shifts or emergency response assignments.
• All work is observational or administrative and conducted under supervision.

Knowledge required by the position includes:

• Knowledge of basic office practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards.
• Knowledge of computers and common office software programs.

Work is assigned and supervised by designated Police Department staff. Work is closely monitored for compliance with departmental policies, confidentiality requirements, and educational objectives.

Guidelines include City and Police Department policies, confidentiality standards, and applicable laws. These guidelines are clear and specific and require strict compliance.

The work consists of varied administrative and observational duties. The purpose of this position is educational in nature and supports both academic goals and departmental efficiency.

Contacts are typically with Police Department staff, City employees, and other interns for learning, information exchange, and administrative support.

The work is typically performed in an office or controlled environment and involves sitting, standing, and light physical activity.

Minimum qualifications include:

• Current enrollment in an accredited college or university.
• Ability to meet internship hour requirements established by the academic institution.
• Ability to pass application review, panel interview, and background screening.
• Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and reliability.
