PT Faculty - Journalism

The El Camino Community College District is now accepting applications for anticipated part‑time faculty positions in the following subject area for the 2026 fall semester to teach in‑person and/or online in the following courses: Journalism Faculty job responsibilities include the development of class curriculum to meet the requirements detailed in the Course Outline of Record, and the assessment of learning outcomes to improve teaching and learning in achieving El Camino College's mission of institutional effectiveness, quality educational programs, and vibrant student support services. Some assignments may include dual‑enrollment courses offsite on high school campuses. Faculty assignments may include morning, afternoon, evening, or weekend hours. Dual enrollment, distance education, online or hybrid with required distance education certification assignments are voluntary. For faculty who are interested in teaching online or hybrid courses, completion of El Camino College's distance education certification process is required or submission of a waiver with evidence of prior certification to develop and teach quality online courses. Faculty may participate in initiatives set forth by the College that support students to achieve their educational goals through collaborations with employers, advisory committees, industry/trade groups, universities, high schools, or other partnerships with related instructional disciplines. Required Qualifications Master's degree in journalism or communication with a specialization in journalism. Bachelor's degree in either of the above AND Master's in English, history, communication, literature, composition, comparative literature, any social sciences, business, business administration, marketing, graphics, or photography. The equivalent—Candidates not possessing the required qualification(s) as stated on this announcement must complete the Request For Equivalency Form as part of the application process to explain in detail how their qualifications are equivalent to those above. Valid California Community college instructor credential in appropriate subject (per California Education Code 87355 issued prior to July 1, 1990). Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of college students, and of individuals with disabilities. Desired Qualifications Community college‑level teaching experience in news writing and reporting, as well as in mass media and society. Professional experience in daily news production, feature and sports writing, copyediting, photojournalism, Associated Press style and familiarity with public interest reporting standards and practices. Online Teaching Certification (highly desirable). Closing Date Monday, July 13, 2026 @ 3:00 PM Salary Part‑time faculty are compensated on a semester basis according to the number of class hours assigned per semester and on cumulative semesters of instruction for the District. The beginning rate is $116.73‑$146.27 (lecture) & $88.47‑$110.84 (lab), per hour depending on education and experience. Conditions of Employment This is a part‑time, temporary position for the fall semester, beginning August 24, 2026. Assignments may include off‑site locations.
